Gregory Peck Pays Visit
To Keflavik International

We at Armed Forces Television are very sorry that you
and your classmates are not satisfied with our present se-
lection of television programs.
Unfortunately, we exercise little control over the selec-
tion of TV programs. We are in somewhat the same situa-
tion as you and your classmates are with your allowance.
We, too, have a “parent” who is located in Los Angeles,
California. This parent organization makes selections of
all programs. To obtain programs for Keflavik and AFRTS
stations all around the world, they must deal with the
studios which make the films, the advertisers who sponsor
the programs, and other parties which in some way are
connected with the production and broadcast of the various
show. Often Los Angeles simply does not have the money
available to get exactly what they would like to have for
distribution.
When Los Angeles finally obtains permission to use a
particular show, they issue it out to the various overseas
television stations operated by the Armed Forces. In much
the same manner as you receive your weekly allowance
from your father, Channel 8 receives one film shipment
per week. Our “allowance” comes in the form of eight
boxes of films, which makes up one week of television pro-
grams as you see them on your home TV set.
Although we would like to please you and your class-
mates as well as all of our viewers, all that we can do is
write Los Angeles suggesting the popularity of certain pro-
grams and request that they be made available to us. It
is our desire that in the future Los Angeles wilt provide
us with shoivs that you all like, even though “Walt Disney”
is no longer available.
I hope that this letter will help you understand better
why we do not and cannot have all of the programs that
we would like to have, but we trust that you and your
classmates will continue to be members of our televiewing
audience.
Very Sincerely,
Claire E. Brou

Renown actor Gregory Peck paid
an unexpected visit to Iceland last
week when his America bound air-
liner stopped briefly at Keflavik
International Airport.
Mr. Peck’s ground time allowed
him about 30 minutes during
which he met the press and de-
lighted souvenir seekers with his
autograph.
Accompanied by his wife, Mr.
Peck was returning to Los Angeles
after filming his latest movie in
France, which is entitled “Behold
the Pale Horse”. His comments
concerning the picture included
“don’t ask me to explain the title.”
Mr. Peck said this was his first
trip to Iceland and that he enjoy-
ed visiting. “I am interested in
every place” he said.

Scores from top musical come-
dies, motion pictures and television
productions are the features on
AFRS, Keflavik’s new Sunday
night show.
The new program, “Footlights
and Soundtracks” replaces the
“Tonight” show at 10:05 p.m. Sun-
day evenings. Tomorrow’s show
puts “Porgy and Bess” in the
spotlight, and next week “South
Pacific” comes your way. In many
cases, the cast will be the original
performers.
Another new feature will be
heard on “A. M. Theater” Friday
mornings at 10:05. The “Line-up”
will replace “Comedy Corner” on
that day. Other features on the
program are: “Gunsmoke” (Mon-
days) ; “My Friend Irma” (Tues-
days) ; “Suspense” (Wednesdays)
and “My Favorite Husband”
(Thursdays).
Saturday might well be labeled
“Country Music Day” on AFRS.
The “foot-stompin’ sound” starts
bright and early — at 6:05 a.m.
with the “Cornshuckers”. More
comes your way at 3:05 p.m. with
“Country Junction” and at 7:30
p.m. with the “Grand Ole Opry”,
the show originating at the
“Country Music Capital of the
World” Nashville, Tennessee.
COMING SOON — “Novelist in
Spotlight”, a five-minute program
dealing with American novelists
and their motivations, will be air-
ed in conjunction with displays
of books by the authors at the

of another picture.”

“What’s My Line?” begins its
15th year on television, a notable
feat in an industry where pro-
grams age fast and die young.
This program is a national habit
and institution which maintains
an air of slight formality and con-
siderable style. Let’s play along
with host John Daly and panelists
Bennett Cerf, Arlene Francis and
Dorothy Killgallen this, and every

A WHITE HOUSE VISIT
Daniel Garcia of Cotulla, Texas,
was a guest of President Lyndon
B. Johnson as a direct result of
an appearance on “I’ve Got a Se-
cret.” As a youngster, Garcia was
one of a class of 30 taught by
Mr. Johnson. One day Mr. John-
son caught Garcia clowning be-
fore the class. He took the offend-
er to his office and spanked him.
Before the show went off the air,
President Johnson placed a tele-
phone call to the studio in New
York and spoke to Garcia back
stage. “Hello Daniel,” said the
President, “I just finished watch-
ing you. Tell me, does it still
hurt?”
“Oh no, Mr. President,” Carcia
replied with a smile, “I treasure
the memory.”
“You’re very photogenic,” Presi-
dent Johnson added. “I congratu-
late you and I would like for
you to come to Washington and
visit me.”
Garcia flew to Washington and
was met at the airport and driven
to the White House to visit with
his former teacher, now President
of the United States.
