Friday, May 21, 1965 WHITE FALCON 7 Volleyball Champions hreal On Teamwork The volleyball season is over and the Admin team mem- bers are champs. In the season’s wrap-up they had to beat a tough Marine team with whom they were tied going into that final night, but they did it and did it in grand style. Wrapping it up in two straight games. All year long Admin has been a tremendously well-drilled team. Not playing a spectacular* brand of ball, but following the fundamentals well. Good position, consistant services and well-placed passes enabled them to wait and watch for their opponents mis- takes. They didn’t make them in return. ANOTHER TROPHY—Two within a week. Here they receive the sec- ond place awards. Losing to Admin on the final night of the season. Volleyball Standings No. Team W L 1. Admin 17 1 2. Marines “A” 16 2 3. 57th FIS 14 3 4. With their gallery of root- ers urging them on, the Marines came on strong with a second game lead. Admin didn’t rattle. They maintained their consistant brand of play-making and as in so many previous games, watched their opponents beat themselves. Congratulations to the Admin team for their fine season. Hope to see the same faces starring in the upcoming softball league. STICK THEM UP—Admin stands tall to obscure their server, Robert Blade, from the eyes of the Ma- rines. Jim Henderson, John Moore, Robert Brown and Bill Hammond face opponents. Vic Smith faces the server to give his teammates the signal to break into defensive positions. The idea behind this maneuver is to keep the serve hidden until the last second and give the defense as little time as possible to adjust to its flight. 1. It was play like this that held the Marines to a tie in the season’s finale. Marines Finish Unbeaten Season With Tie; Take Second Consecutive Football Trophy by Cpl. Jim Wojcicki, USMC Last Thursday the Marines wrapped up the intramural football championship by virtue of a scoreless tie with the Rockville Raiders. This tie was the only mar on an otherwise perfect season. For this string of victories much credit must be given to Ski Guzniczak with his pin-point passing, and on the receiving end,Dan Hoptry and Dennis Rothrock with their deceptive moves and “sticky fingers.” To add balance to this fast-moving attack, Earl Forrest was available to be called on for his flashy broken-field running. Naturally these men couldn’t^ win alone and they didn’t have to try. Able Assistance Plenty of able assistance was provided by fullback Jim Young, end Chuck Monteith, center Clen Buchanan, guards Harry Russel, Tony Pinti and Art Vincion. These club with the spirit and the mus- cle to win. A hard-to-stop offense and a stickly defense made this team hard to beat. The offense ran off an unbalanced line util- izing short passes, to pull the de- fense in, then booming the long bomb or the yard-eating power sween. Baseball Season Approaching With the football championship now behind us for the second con- secutive year, we marines are now looking forward to the fast-ap- proaching baseball season. Here and now we would like to cordially invite any and all competition to the 1965 softball league. plus the defensive secondary spec- ialists Dave Ackley, Don Ed- mundson, Chuck Roote and Tom Nicholson provided all the sup- port neccessary to make up a hard-hitting, smooth-running ball Little League Opens In Kef The Keflavik Little League Baseball Club is presently organ- izing its teams, managers and coa- ches for the start of the little league season in June. All equipment such as uniform, bats, balls, etc., are available but men to manage and coach the ballclubs are urgently needed. The Keflavik Little League plans to have four ballclubs this season. Each team will consist of 11 to 15 players plus one man- ager and two coaches. The club hopes to have three to four men managing and coaching each team. This is desired in case one or more of the staff members have to work during game time. It should be noted that the coac- hing and managerial duties are voluntary work. Baseball practice starts later this month to prepare for the 16- game schedule which runs from June to July. All persons and ‘‘little leagers” interested in joining the club con- tact H. R. Long, YN1, at Ext. 3241, for more information. A Mere Six Points The tenacious defense was just as outstanding. They allowed a mere six points to be scored against them all season. They used a lot of stunting and red- dogging to keep the rival offenses off balance. In addition the sec- ondary was played up tight or loose, depending upon the passing strength of the opponent. It was generally conceded that Rockville was both our strongest and best-drilled opponent, with NSG rating not too far behind as a definite danger. WINNERS AND THEIR PLUNDER — Major Iviracofe, commanding officer of the Marine Barracks, and his winning squad of leathernecks, gather around their king-sized cup. With one tie game as the only mar on their record, they promised to do even better next year. Football Standings No. Team W L T 1. Marines 7 0 1 2. Rockville 5 0 2 3. AMD 6 3 0 4.
