4 WHITE FALCON Friday, July 8, 1966 Ground Control Approach Helps Guide Aircraft by Andre Levac, JOSN GCA TRAILER—Mounted on the trailer are three radar antennas and two radio antennas. Since the unit has to be in the same direction the aircraft is coming, it is mounted on a circular steel track and can be swung around in a 360 degree circle. You are now 3,000 feet in the air. The flight has been smooth and pleasant even though there has been a nasty storm all the way. But now you are about to land. In 15 more minutes, you should be getting off the aircraft. You open the cur- tains and you look down; nothing. All you can see is the rain drops sliding down the window; and you wonder; “How does the pilot do it? How does he know where he is going?” In most modern commercial air- craft, a complex radar system is installed in the control room so the pilot relies on his own instru- ments. But many a time he re- quests guidance from Ground Con- trol Approach. “Keflavik GCA, this is NAVY 52184 .... over.” The radio con- tact is made, the aircraft is ap- proaching the runway. Ground Control Approach is a landing aid to pilots in bad and/or abnormal weather conditions. The Keflavik GCA’s mission is to give landing aid to all NATO military aircraft and upon request, to any com- mercial aircraft. After radio contact is made the aircraft is first picked up on air surveillance radar. For positive radar identification the controller asks the pilot to make several identifying turns. Upon completion of the above, the pilot is issued lost communica- tion procedures and such other in- formation needed to effect a safe landing. For the last 10 mile portion of the flight, the pilot is given de- tailed information regarding his descent angle, the flight altitude, airspeed and his relationship to the runway. At this point the controller as- sumes complete responsibility of the aircraft. All these operations are per- formed in a huge control unit, lo- cated near the runway. Mounted on the trailer are three radar an- tennas and two radio antennas. To enable the aircraft to make an approach to the runway, the trailer has to face the same di- rection. The unit is mounted on a circular steel track and can be swung around in a 360 degree circle. A •30 PAYS has e5&PTSM6GR... AFPIL, <J(Jlie., & KlOV6.MB6.lZ.... AU- TH6. When this picture was taken, the largest of these brown trout (7 lbs., 10 in.; 26 in. long) was the biggest fish caught by any NavSta personnel since the fishing season began in April. (Copy.
