Wishard Here in Iceland, where the tour of duty is so short, the rounds of Hail and Bless parties are innumerable, and in the course of a year, one hears a good many “Bless” speeches. My favorite “Bless Speech” has always been the one given by St. John the Evangelist. Tradition says that Saint John lived to a ripe old age, and as he lay feeble and weak in his last hours, he was not strong enough to say very much, and so his words were simply, “Little children, LOVE ONE ANOTHER!” The other disciples were pretty weary of hearing these same words, for St. John had always emphasized the neces- sity of love in the Christian life, and they asked him why he never said anything else, and especially now, in his last hours. St. John’s reply was, “If you do this alone, it is enough”. If we could adhere to these words, if we could forget differences and personality conflicts, if we could be under- standing and patient with each other, and above all, antici- pate the needs of our shipmates and comrades, the com- plexity of our daily lives would disappear. It is not the cold climate, the restrictions, the rules, the hard work and difficult hours that make duty difficult — it is hatred, dis- content and pettiness — or in short, A LACK OF BROTHERLY LOVE. We all might ask ourselves if we are contributing to the morale and happiness by our practice of Charity — or are we rather adding to the misery caused by the absence of this mark of the Christian man. Keep Tuned To AFRT8 Where’s Your Idea ner The first game of the Little League Baseball final got under- way at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, with the crowd of approximately 75 parents and youngsters cheer- ing their favorite players. The first game was between the combined teams of the Tigers and the Braves, who faced the Dod- gers and the Yankees 8 to 10 age group. The Tiger-Braves team emerged the victors 12-10 behind the slugging of second baseman Dean Wright and pitcher Bobby Carter, who doubled, and catcher George Cankey who tripled. The winning pitcher was Bobby Car- ter, and the losing hurler was Mike Trombetti. The second game was the Tigers and Braves of the 11 to 13 age divi- sion facing the Dodgers and the Yankees of the same group. The Tiger-Braves combination was too much for their opponents, as they blasted home a victory, 22-5. Topping the big bats for the winners was Lyndon Whitman, who had three homers and eight R. B. I.’s. In the season standings, the Tigers came home first, Dodgers second, Yankees third and in the cellar spot were the Braves. Responsible for the success for this season were not only the coaches, but William Jones, league president, who was instrumental in the acquisition of the uniforms and bats and balls. The Navy’s study retention group recommends looking into factors of the enlisted advance- ment system. Investigative areas include eligibility criteria on which the CO’s recommendations are made, the Enlisted Perfor- mance Evaluation Sheet, means for evaluating enlisted perform- ance marks, and factors compri- sing the advancement multiple.
