MOM’s ANGEL TOPPING
ROBRUCHA IN VIETNAM___
Repovt
A Republic F-105 Thunder-
chief pilot shot down a MIG 17
on Aug. 18 over North Vietnam
to bring the Air Force total of
MIG kills to 13.
Twelve of the MIG knockdowns
are confirmed and one is a
probable.
The action took place some 25
miles north-northeast of Hanoi
as a flight of four Thunderchiefs
pulled up after striking a sur-
face to-air missile site.
Attacking from behind, the first
of a MIG flight of two aircraft
fired as it swept behind the lead
Thunderchief. The American
pilot broke away left, allowing the
number two F-105 to dip under the
MIG and trigger it with a blast
from its 20mm Vulcan gatling
gun.
“The MIG burst into flames,
rolled over and dove into the
ground,” observers said.
Air Force crews continued
pounding Communist targets in
North and South Vietnam during
the week ending Aug. 19.
A variety of military targets
were destroyed or damaged in
North Vietnam while pilots flying
in South Vietnam supported more
than a dozen ground search and
destroy operations and made
strikes on enemy troop concentra-
tions and positions throughout
the country.
Facing poor weather, intense
ground fire and encounters with
Communist jet fighters, Air
Force pilots flew 341 missions in
North Vietnam during the week.
Petroleum, oil and lubricant
(POL) dumps and routes of tra-
vel were primary targets.
Forty-five POL dumps were
destroyed or damaged along with
45 convoy staging areas and 44
supply storage facilities. Pilots
triggered more than 110 secondary
explosions and touched off more
than 175 fires during their strikes.

New Army Combat Weapon
Goes Into Production
A new weapon for the combat
soldier—a combination of the
rapid fire M-16 rifle and the
grenade launcher — is going into
production for the Army.
The Defense Department, in
making the announcement, said,
“The versatility of the combined
rifle and launcher adds a new
dimension to the tactical needs and
firepower of the soldier.”
The launcher is attached to the
underside of the M-16 and incorpo-
rates an aluminum barrel. It
weighs just 2.8 pounds and can
be fired without impairing mobi-
lity.
