The family of SkarS at SkarSstrond has lived on their farm generation after generation for over a millenium. In
the area around the farm and on a myriad of small islands in Breidafjordur belonging it, the eider has enjoyed
the status of a protected specie. In the early summer every year the eiderdown has been gathered from the
nests and replaced by hay and no harm is done to the birds or to their young ones.
This is the only down gathered in free cooperation with the birds themselves. In fact a unique alliance has
developed between the eiders and the farmers. The farmers protect the bird by keeping the beasts of pray
away from the nests and in return the eider protects the humans from the arctic cold with the down which
they pick from their breasts. The Eders seem to sense that they get this protection by giving away the down.
This is a beautiful cooperation between man and a wild bird, which is spending most of the year in harsh
condition on the arctic sea.
