Who can be an Ombudsman? By Diane Jones Ombudsman Coordinator During your tour in Iceland, whether you are Navy or Air Force, you can apply to be an ombudsman for your command or squadron. AH that is needed to get started is a sincere desire to help others and a letter of intent. A letter of intent may sound intimidating but it isn't. The letter should be made out to your commanding officer or squadron commander, typed in a memorandum form and state your wish to represent your command or squadron. It is helpful to list any background that would help you with this posi- tion as well as prior training and knowledge of the ombudsman pro- gram. If you haven’t had the opportunity to get training or perform pre- viously as an ombudsman, it’s okay. An ombudsman gets a lot of on- the-job training. Some individuals are better suited than others for this position. Those individuals that are good listeners, function well under stress and under- stand the military chain of command usually make some of the best ombudsman. If you consider yourself to be one of these special indi- viduals, contact your command master chief or first sergeant for specif- ic needs of your command or squadron. Currently the ombudsman manning is less than 100 percent. If you are the type of person who is willing to help others and try to make a difference, this volunteer position is for you. If I can be of any further assistance, please don’t hesitate to call me at ext. 4757. Independce Day Schedule of Events • The 4th of July Parade begins at 10 a.m. in the Commissary parking lot.
