5 The picture at the left shows ivhat the invasion of Italy look- id like to the American dough- boys who arrived early to estab- lish a beachhead at Salerno. The small invasion boats stretched as far as the'eye could see, and all of them were heavily laden with men and equipment. The Nazis or Japs will have another Rickenbacker to worry about soon! Marine Pvt. David E. Rickenbacker (left), son of the famous air ace, is pictured here learning bayonet fighting while going through “boot” training a Parris Island, S.C. Dave wants to be a Marine fighter pilot. A spark from an electric welding torch started the fire (above) that swept a roundhouse and shops of the New York Central rail- road in Bellefontaine, Ohio. In this first picture of the invasion of Italy shown moving in amphibious “ducks” north to arrive in America, British soldiers (above) of “Reggio Calabria on the Italian peninsula. Above, lucky Capt. Thomas C. Wallace of Pasadena, Calif., holds a reunion with his bride, lovely Carole Landis, at a New York night club. The blonde film star married Capt. Wallace while on a tour of Britain to entertain troops. Almost as potent as a “Buck Rogers” ray gun, the Bazooka (left) has proven deadly to Ger- man tanks. Ordinarily one man holds the weapon and another but in a pinch one can operate.it. The gun fires a rocket with, fins, spurts flame out of its. the marksman feels practically no kick from the pow- “tank-killer”.
