Soldier Of
An MP’s “MP” is their own
topkick, First Sgt. Fred R. Pusch
of Union City, Pa.
Sgt. Pusch, who is known to
some of his charges as “Uncle
Fred,” developed his athletic
prowess while playing baseball,
basketball, football and track for
Grove City College. Just before
he turned professional he parti-
cipated in the 1932 Olympics and
placed at the top of the Eastern
eliminations.
After college he did four years
backfield duty with the Buffalo
Bears and mentioned Bronco Na-
gurski as the greatest fullback he
had ever played against and the
Chicago Bears as the toughest
team. His ideal basketeer was
Dutch Denhert of the N.Y. Celt-
ics who was many times his op-
ponent while pounding the bo-
ards for the Waren Hyvis Oilers.
1st Sgt Fred R. Pusch
The Week
“Uncle Fred” finally put on a
little too much -weight and he
decided he could do better on the
bench so he went to Union City
to teach the boys what he had
learned. During his stay at Union
City many of his boys were
brought up to the big time. His
small high school teams took
many titles.
Sgt. Pusch, the power behind
the championship MP court five,
says — “A player must love the
game to be really proficient in
it.” He believes that 80 percent of
good playing is due to natural
ability and only 20 percent to
coaching.
Trucks Given Same
Priority As R29s
A recent War Dept, policy has
assigned the same high priority
to heavy trucks as is being ob-

B29 Super-Fortresses. It was ex-
plained that this action has been
taken to allay a predicted short-
age of 80,000 heavy trucks for
military use in Normandy and
elsewhere.

large portion of the U.S. popula-
tion which is mentally sick with
veneral diseases and depleted by
other illnesses justifies federal
measures and funds to put the
nation in sound health.
Senator Would
Prohibit Early Sale
Of Surplus War Goods
A plan to impound millions of
dollars worth of surplus war
goods for a period of five years
after the end of the war has been
placed before the Senate Military
Committee by Sen. Edwin C.
Johnson (D.-Col.).
Johnson declared that the
dumping of vast stocks of gov-
ernment-owned supplies on post-
war markets would retard indust-
rial reconversion and might dis-
rupt the entire civilian economy.
He would include in the huge re-
serve all items except perishables.

U.S. Winter Food
Supply Said Plentiful
The Department of Agricult-
ure disclosed this week that
food supplies will be plentiful
for civilians this coming winter.

vegetables and cereal products
will be on hand.
