Tilts In IBC Softball Elimination
Keflavik entries took a commanding lead in their quest for the Iceland Base Command
softball championship when they decisively eliminated three of Reykjavik’s hopefuls in the op-
ening round of play early this week on the Monmouth diamond.
Wednesday brought the tour-
ney’s first surprise when the usu-
ally strong MP Plymouths fell an
easy victim to the crack Triple-
A Red Sox, 8-2. While Pvt. Julian
Tubb was limiting the losers to
six hits, his mates landed on Jim-
my Irick at opportune times and
were never in danger.
Flawless twirling by Sgt. Car-
son Dykes featured the Triple-A
Rosebuds’ 3-0 triumph over the
Signal Doolittles in the inaugural
game Monday. Dykes allowed the
Signal batters but two hits and
struck out eight while applying
the whitewash. Ernie Carrabal’s
two-bagger in the second sent in
enough runs to clinch the strug-
gle.
The Signal Dodgers waited un-
til the tourney to suffer their
first defeat of the season and then
took a pasting from the Engineer
FBIs, 11-2, to bow out of com-
petition.
Cpl. Tony Koziara gave the
Dodgers but two hits, was never
in trouble, and poled a homer to
help his own cause. The FBIs
wasted no time in icing the fray,
denting the plate five times in
the opening inning to drive Whit-
man of the Dodgers off the hill.
First round games are expect-
ed to be completed by tomorrow
afternoon, which will enable the
survivors to begin second round
games Monday afternoon.

Gunder Haegg
Sets Mark In
Two-Mile Run
For the second time this sum-
mer Gunder Haegg, Sweden’s
great running star, set a new
world’s record for the two-mile
run when he travelled the dist-
ance in 8:42.8 last week in Stock-
holm.
In setting the mark, Haegg clip-
ped three and six-tenths of a sec-
ond from his 8:46.4 time which
he posted early this season.
Haegg’s new world’s record
gives him and his companion,
Arne Andersson, a monopoly on
the one and two-mile crowns.
Two weeks ago Andersson sped
the mile in 4:01.6, closest man
has come to the oft-dreamed ‘per-
fect mile.’
Andersson set a world’s record
for the three-quarter mile run
early this season.
Shown above is Gunder Haegg.
Sweden’s crack runner, who set a
new world’s record of 8:42.8 f°r
the two-miile run last week.

Stella Walsh Posts
New Track Record
Stella Walsh, despite her 33
years, still retains the touch
which carried her to Olympic
track fame.
Recently in Harrisburg, Pa.,
Miss Walsh sped over the cind-
ers to set a new AAU 200-meter
record of :24.6. It was half a sec-
ond short of the American rec-
ord which she established at
Cleveland 12 years ago.
