Owen, 6l-year-old gran-
dmother of Carmi, Ill.,
who recently entered
high school as a fresh-
man, has flung herself
into her classmates'
extra-curricular activ-
ities with youthful a-
bandon. Returning to
her studies after an
absence of 47 years,
Mrs. Owen participated
in the regular fresh-
man initiation by walk-
ing through a cemetery
at night while "upper-
classmen" hovered about
in sheets.

es" are working as desk
sergeants and perform-
ing various types of
investigating work in
the Los Angeles Police
Department, according
to the‘ Civil Service
Assembly. The women,
who are employed for
the duration and six
months, will relieve
regular policemen for
more active work in the
department.

pplies for the first
six months with ration-
ing uncertain, but pl-
entiful thereafter.
Processed foods, fr-
esh fruits and vege-
tables - adequate supp-
lies without rationing.
Shoes - rationing
will continues other
clothing will be short
of civilian need.
Gasoline - very grad-
ual easing over several
months.
Fuel oil - rationing
next winter as well as
this.
Passenger car tires -
rationing terminated
within three months.

over Pvt. William A.
Scharfenberger. For 22
years this grizzled
veteran has turned down
all offers of a fur-
lough since he took a
nine-day emergency fur-
lough in May, 1922. Re-
cently he received hie
first letter in three
years. Routed through
the Adjutant General’s
office, it was from his
sister who asked blunt-
ly: "Where have you
been for the last ten
years?"
