5 THE LOCAL SCENE Pixe uDAfflcQwcft- XC BLAND SERGEANT, HAVE y0UR MEN FALLOUT FOR POLICE CALL'/ Nurse Says Iceland Fjords Provide Inspiration For Hobby Lt. Josephine Austin would laugh heartily if you called her a painter, but more than one person at an Army Base Hospital here where she is a nurse, can vouch to ‘the fact that not only is she a painter—but a mighty good one. Lt. Austin will first tell 3rou that she has never paint- ed a stroke in her life until she came to Iceland, last Jan- uary. “I don’t know why I never tried before,” she said, “but one day last spring I just felt the urge so I went down to Reykjavik, bought some water-colors, brushes and paper—came back, looked across the fjord and started painting.” No conformist to the sur- realist or cubist school, she paints natural, “pretty” pictures, as she calls them. From water-colors she pro- gressed to oils, which she handles with a deft stroke. Colored crayon sketches she finds a bit more difficult and does not attempt too many of them. “Don’t ask me how I blend my paints, what technique I use in applying them or anything about vari- ous lights, for I just mix them and daub it on as it strikes my fancy.” That the “fancy” is a fine one is att- ested to by friends at the hospital and at home who now keep her busy in her spare time trying to catch up on their requests for pict- ures. Since that spring day when she diocovered her talent, she has painted some 15 water-colors, five oils and a few crayon sketches. She Lt. Josephine Austin exhi- bits a few of her paintings to a Signal Corps photographer. ^ •. ic*u J3w ■ now believes that she will take up art as a serious hobby, in addition to sing- ing, and study painting as a “side line” upon her return to civilian life. An Army nurse since Octo- ber, 1943, Lt. Austin is a na- tive of Weymouth, Mass. An OWI report from Washington, issued after the recent B-29 raids on Japan, states that “the rather gener- al impression that Tokyo is a tinderbox city, which could be destroyed by incendiary bombs, is one of the most inaccurate of popular fal- lacies. “Metropolitan Tokyo,” says the report, “which includes the cities of Kawasaki, Yoko- hama and the naval base community of Yokosuka, has been prepared for years against earthquakes and fir- es. The significance of this is that buildings designed to withstand earthquake shock are also well adapted to withstand bomb shocks.” Jap Aliens In U.S. May Now Volunteer For Armed Forces Japanese aliens now living in the U.S. may volunteer for service in the American Army.
