TORGER TOKLE MAKES
LAST JUMP IN ITALY
Torger Tokle, the world’s
champion ski jumper, has
made his last leap.
A tech sergeant in Italy,
Tokle was killed in action
early this month while lead-
ing his tenth mountain div-
ision platoon on Monte Tar-
raccia in the Alpines. Shell
fragments out him down as
the 86th- Regiment shoved
off on a four-mile advance.
Tokle, Norwegian horn,
joined the Army in 1942 and
became a citizen in 1943.

night when he heat the sens-
ational Guilder Haegg to the

Bankers’ Mile at the ninth
annual Chicago relays.
It was Rafferty’s third
consecutive decision over
the flying Swede in the latt-,
er’s three appearances since
coming to the U.S. this wint-
er.
Rafferty broke the tape at
4:13.7 after trailing Haegg
until the finjal lap.
Haegg, wjio spent three
weeks on the. water before
landing in IheiU.S., has bett-
ered his performance each
time he’s stepped on the
track, and race followers

For Overseas Theaters
Two groups of civilian ath-
letic leaders will head over-
seas soon to serve with the
athletic branch of the Arm-
y’s Special Service division.
The groups will he head-
ed byr Fritz Crisler, U. of
Michigan football coach,
and Cal Hubbard of the Nat-
ional football and American
baseball loops.
Coaching clinics in sever-
al sports are expected to be
organized in the two war
theatres to stimulate Army
athletic activity.

star, has been appointed
backfield coach at Notre
Dame.

With half of the season
over the Triple-A Bears
continue to show the way
in the third round of IBC
basketball in the Reykjavik
area with an unblemished
record of seven wins in as
many starts. They clawed
the Headquarters Flyers a-
part, 82-39, for their latest
decision.
The Brooklyn College
basketball scandal, which
broke when five players
were alleged to have accept-
ed a bribe for throwing a
game, is having reverberat-
ions.
When records of the play-
ers| involved were examined
during the investigation, it
was found that Larry Pearl-
stein, one of the five hoopst-
ers and a confessed bribe-
taker, was not enrolled at
Brooklyn College.
Shortly afterwards, it was
claimed that Jack LaUb,
City College of New York
player, had participated in
six games with the Beav-
ers this season without being
registered at the college.
Laub registered at City
College in February but
stopped going to classes
when his schedule interfer-
ed with his studies at the
