It was 1941! The United States of America was at peace — happy and safe,
complacent. Poland had fallen. Great Britain and France had declared war
on Germany. Denmark and Norway had been occupied by the Germans. Holland,
Belgium and Luxemburg had been invaded. Italy had stabbed France in the back.
Germany had invaded Russia. Germany! Germany! Germany!
In Washington, D.C., far-sighted military leaders stuck a pin on a map of the
North Atlantic — ICELAND! A few weeks later citizens of this little, neutral isle
congregated in interested groups at docks as khaki-clad soldiers stepped down a
gangplank and set foot on their soil.
The first American Expeditionary Force in World War II had landed on for-
eign territory! Some of them were to go on to Italy, to Ireland, to England, to
France, to Germany. Others were to remain here guarding and maintaining the
life-line to Europe. All helped to realize the glorious goal achieved this week —
V-E —Victory in Europe!

War came home to roost in Western Germany on September 12, 1944 when Allied

Scenes like the above greeted the Allied liberating armies on their crusade through
Western Europe. Here Parisians, with Old Glory and the Tricolor, manifest their happi-
ness and joy as they extend an impromptu welcoming party to French and American
forces after the liberation of Paris August 18-20.
