Puke of Aosta surrenders.
7000 Italians captured at Amba Alagi.
London, May 19th.
The Duke of Aiosta will surrender, at noon
tomiorrow together with the whole of his
force, sfupplies and guns. The Italian tnoops
at Amba Alagi are estimated to be aboot
7,000. The Diuke has asked to be the last
man to leave together with his senior
officers.
The Duke of Aosta is 42 years old. He
is a cousin of the Kinig of Italy. When he
was appointed Gommander-in-Chief in Abys-
sinia in Febriuary he told the Italian King
tha* he would last out siomehiow-
In the Gondar area Sudanese troiops have
advanoed rapidly. In South Abyssinia Im-
perial foroes have captured an impo'rtantl
position and taken 800 prisoners, inciuding
two oo'oneis and a n'umber of staff officers.
The Cairo oommuniqué today states tha't
there has been no cliange in the situation in
Libya. T:wo enemy oolumns, supported bir
numerous tanks, crossed the fhontier this
morning but turned back when they met
with forward British tnoops. The German
reports that Soilum had been retaken are
not true. The Germans have Aiecaptuned
some heights overloolung Sollum but the
town itself is held by a famioius British
regiment.
In Iraq the situation remains unchanged.
. It is pointed out in London tliat the oc-
oupation of Amba Alagi is of the utmiost
importance. The Duke of Aosta asked for
terms of surrender early on Friday and was
then given a few hours to accept the terms,
whiich iwene those of a surrender without
•onditions- He aooeptied as previaUsly stated.
Ooriiespiondents in Naihobi have many
stories to teil of how Transvaal tnoops, ad-
vancing on Amba Alagi from the south,
drove the Italians out of their cunningly
h'idden fortresses in the mountains by accu-
rate mortar fire and mowed them down by
machine-giun fine.
The R. A. F. have been very active, not
only 'in North Africa but also in Greace
whene numerous aehodnomes have been suo-
cessfully attaoked and many German plane*
destroyed-
The New Zealand Premier, Mr. Frazer,
now in Cairo, said yesterday that the New
Zealand troops who were in Greeoe had
oome ba-ck with their tails up and oonvincad
that they can beat the Germans everywher*.
