The Sinews of War
Germany’s Oil Supplies.
The basic difficulties of Germany’s oil
supplies have been revealed in a speech
by Dr. Robert Wilson, head of the U.S.
Petroleum Consultant Office.
“The total production, including im-
ports and synthetic output from which
German and Italian war efforts are being
fuelled is equal to only five per cent of
the United States production of crude oil.
“Germany’s oil shortage will surely
work against her in a long war, for the
following reasons: Italy will be more of
a liability than an asset, the discouraging
outlook of Germany regarding oil sup-
plies must require her to divert con-
siderable attention and energy to increas-
ing her supplies, and the shortage must
also interfere increasingly with industrial,
agricultural and eventually military ope-
rations.
“The whole capture or control of Iraq
would to some extent hamper British
operations, but the oil supplies could not
be þrought in via Italy or Germany in
any appreciable volume unless the Axis
gained control of the Mediterranean.
“When England achieves sufficient air
superiority to permit heavy longrange
day-time attacks on Germany’s synthetic
plants and transports, she will be striking
such a vital spot that an actual invasion
might never be necessary for England to
win the war.”
