The Prime Minister 'in a comprehensive statement to the
Commons on the war situation began with an account of his meet-
ing with the President of the USA at which, he said, conclusions
were reached on four main topics. Firstly, the eight points de-
claration, secondly, measures for help for the Soviet Union,
thirdly, tlie policy to be pursued towards Japan, fourthly, a large
number of technicalities déalt with by the service chiefs of hoth
countries.

The Russian have recapture the important railway town of
Elnya and fifty villages in addition. After twenty-six days
of grim battle the Germans were flung back 16 miles and
are still retreating. In this sector the Nazis had built strong
fortifications and fought for every inch of ground. Some of
their units suffered immense losses, up to 80%, and others
\vere destroyed. The woods and marshes were strewn with
tens of thousands of their dead.

The United Státes state De-
partment has announced that
a ship under American control
has been torpedoed while
bringing supplies of food to
Iceland.
She is the Ex-Danish ship
“Sessa” of 1,700 tons. Twenty
four members of the crew, in-
cluding one American are
presumed lost, and there are
three survivors.
She was torpedoed 300 miles
south west of Iceland on Aug-
ust 17. The three survivors
