Black-Out Relaxed in Moscow
..-.■■■■»'
London, Sept. 23rd.
Savage battles are being fought around Leningrad. Moscow
íePorts today claim a big Russian success at one point of the
front wher<e the Germans have been hurled back seven miles.
Russians attacked with bayonets through heavy fire and at
*he sight of cold steel the German ranks wavtered and broke. In
central sector the Germans are still on the run and fighting
ls going on all around the ruins of Smolensk.
Marshal Timoshenko had made a successful pincer move-
**ent and the Germans were in a hottle neck. They had to retire
through a gap of only three miles and suffered immtense casu-
aIties.
BATTLES round lake
ilmen.
Fierce battles have raged
r°Und Lake Ilmen for three
Weeks. The “Red Star” says
^hat the Nazis have left there
about 15.000 killed and wound-
ed men.
North of Ladoga the Russi-
ans are holding the Finns on
the old frontier. Stockholm re-
P°rts state that Finnish casu-
alties are heavy and that Mar-
shal Mannerheim has gone to
the front.
kUSSIANS’ ATTEMPTS TO
BREAK THROUGH.
In the Ukraine the Russian
íorce withdrawn from Kiev
are trying to break through the
^erman lines. It is reluctantly
admitted by the Germans that
a large part of Budjenny’s
arrny has not been surrounded,
anh that the Russians are
^^king extremely heavy
counter-attacks at Poltava
some 80 miles from Kharkov.
RUMANIANS SUFFER.
At Odessa the Russians have
again suffered heavy casualti-
es. They had succeeded in
driving a wedge into the Russi-
an line, a mile behind them,
and into this wedge they
poured troops. Success seemed
ensured. íhen the Russian
artillery opened up at point
blank range and in an incred-
ibly short time the Rumanians
had been mown down. The
valley was strewn with bodies.
LIGHTS OF MOSCOW SHINE
AGAIN.
For the first time since Hitl-
er invaded Russia street lights
in Moscow were switched on
tonight. They can be put off in
15 seconds by operating a mast-
er switch, in case of an air raid
warning.
M. Maisky Tells
of Huge
■ Casualties
Appeal for Help
Speaking to the American
Chamber of Commence yester-
day, M. Maisky, Soviet Am-
bassador to London, said the
German reports of their losses
in the Russian campaign were
ridiculous. According to a con-
servative estimate the actual
losses suffered by Germany
consisted of some three million
men, killed wounded and miss-
ing.
8,500 PLANES DOWN.
The number of German
planes destroyed within the
first three months of the war
in the East amounted to some
thing like 8.500.
“About- one third of the
wbole German ajrmy is now
hors de combat.“
Panama Ship Snak
Ii lcelandic Waters
London, Sept. 23rd.
Last night Washington re-
ports stated that the vessel
“Plnk Star” had been sunk.
The ship was flying the Pan-
ama flag and carried a gener-
al cargo. She w^s sunk in Ice-
landic waters and the crew has
not been heard of.
Berlin officials today stated
that the ship had been in Ger-
man operational waters and
that reeently some sinking in
the Atlantic had been announ-
ced but they had got no speci-
al information about the
“Pink Star.”
SITUATION SERIOUS.
M. Maisky, however, did not
minimise the seriousness of the
situation due to Russian losses,
occupation of important in-
dustrial areas and necessary
destruction of plants by the
Russians themselves.
From democratic and free-
dom loving countries he ap-
pealed for help in the way of
more aeroplanes and tanks.
“In sending help,” he said,
“these countries cannot but
realize that they are helping
themselves.”
AMATEUR STRATEGISTS.
M. Maisky said that the lip
talk of amateur strategists of
a standstill in Russia when
winter came, was pure non-
sense. The Russians would
fight on and so would the Ger-
mans.
Italian Sinking
Claims False
London, Sept. 23rd.
Yesterday the Italians de-
clared that they had sunk three
big ships at Gibraltar and
driven a fourth aground. —
Reports from London this
morning state that as usual the
report is a bit exaggerated. —
Actually the Italians sunk a
small boat.
Iranian Reforms
London, Sept. 23rd.
The Iran Government is pre-
paring large scale reforms in
the country. The army and the
police will be reorganised,
legislation revised and big re-
forms brought about in edu-
cation and health services.
