Ihe Battle for Moscow is Greatest in World’s History Nazis Throw in Evcrythingj lh Huge Brenk - Through Bid •ed Army, Claimed Broken, Fights Moseow fflard and Determined w hat is probably the fiercest battle in all history, both in scope and intensity, is now raging in the central area of the Russian front. — The Russian communiqé of today that in the terrific assault of the last three days, the Germans h«ve suffered tremendous ses — thousands of men, and an enormous number of tanks, trains and equipment. hi Moscow the grave- situa- 011 is fully realized. The j^^est fight of all is now go- ® °n north of Orel, a town . ^he railway-line Kharkov— oscow, 200 miles due south. th caPitai- Orel fell into 2 e hands of the enemy after days 0f terrific fighting, ere the defenders fcught the h Va<^ers street by street and fof186 ^ house. The Russian newspaper rfavHQ ,i CaRs on aii and every foJl ot the Russian people to Cfs0Vv the spirit of the defend- ReninSrad and Odessa, coi, Stand fast and die for their ntly rather than yield or surrender to the enemy. Mos- cow is hard and determined. — “In this death struggle” the paper says, “Hitler has put forth all his main forces, an enormous murnber of tanks and nearly all his planes. He has nearly completely emptied the subdued countries of men of fightihg age, replacing them witli old men and youths.” In London it is stated that in Eastern Ukraine things are very obscure at the moment. All seems quiet in Odessa and the surrcunding area. The Germans claim that large forces of Marshal Bud- jenny’s armies have been sur- rounded by simultaneous ad- vances of German troops from south along the coast and from the north, and that large pock- ets of Budjenny’s forces have been surrounded and are just waiting for surrender or anni- hilation. It is furthermore pointed out in London today that the Ger- mans are now repeating all their assertions from July 12tli, when they announced that Russian resistance was com- pletely broken and that the road to Moscow lay open. A special announcement to day frcm Hitler’s headquarters, states that 3 Russian armies have been surrounded south of Vyasma and are in a hopeless .situation, waiting for surrend- er or annihilation. -The ann- ouncement also claims, that- Timoshenko has now sacrified his last army capable of giving battle at the Russian front. A little íater Goebbels made a further comment on this when he told foreign journa- lists that the Russians had now sent their last 50—70 divisi- ons into Timoshenko’s battle and that they were now en- circled in two pockets. When they had surrendered further resistance would be over, as there was no doubt that the Russian front was completely smashed. The Russian communiqué of tcday reveals that before this attack started, Hitler had of- ficially announced - that this was to be the last decisive battle of the year. He would smash thé Russians before winter set in, and this offen- sive was to be a death blow struck at Russia and Britain. Here in London the situation is ccnsidered to have become very serious. 1-Gdd Trawler Beats U-Boat Crew Captured: Brousht to Gib. London, Oct. 9th. The Admiralty today ann- ounced that another German submarine had surrended to our forces, this time to a trawl- er, carrying only one 4-inch gun and machine guns. Unfor- tunately the U-boat could not be brought to harbour this time as it sgnk immediately after surrendering. The trawler, “Lady Shirley” was on duty when she discov- ered a large enemy submarine on the surface. The U-boat immediately dived, but the trawler soon brought it to the surface again by depth charg- es, and then attacked it with its one 4-inch gun and machine gun fire, which prevented the enemy from reaching their cannon. The U-boat crew an- swered with machine gun fire and succeeded in killing the trawler’s 4-inch gunner, but another man immediately took his place and the trawler’s two machine-gunners kept up a steady fire, although'both were wounded. After the submarine had been hit several times with 4-inch shells, the crew manning the conning-tower held up their hands as a token of surrender. The submarine sank immedia- tely after its crew of 44 had been rescued. Coming aboard one of the submarine’s crew complimented our men for the daring and successful attack on an enemy Continued on page 4.)
