4 DAILY POST Germais Bring Crack Tank Division To Tnnisia. Eighth Army Takes Zuara. : ' London, February Ist. lt is now known that the redouhtable German lOth' Pan- zer Division—perhaps the most famous of all German armour- ed units—has now arrived in Tunisia. finadalcanal Will Be Cleared Of Japs In 30 Days. — Col Knox. London, February lst. Col. Knox, Secretary of the United States Navy, has return- ed from a Pacific joumey of inspection taking him, together with Admiral Nimitz, CINPAC, to the Solomons and to the New Hebrides. This division was one of the main factors in the swift crush ing of Polish resistance in Sept. 1939, and in 1940 it added to its laurels by smashing through the French defence line at Mense. EIGHTH ARMY’S PROGRESS In Tripolitania the British 8th Army is now west of Zu- ara, the occupation of which was reported yesterday. In cen tral Tunisia infantry, tanks and artillery have been advanced in clashes, officially described as being on a small scale. The Eighth Army’s occupa- tion yesterday of Zuara, means that Montgomery’s men have covered 70 miles since they entered Tripoli a week ago, — thus averaging 10 miles a day. Zuara is a small harbour town, but very important to the en- emy, and consequently a good place for us to have. ENTERING THE MARSHES Messages from Tripoli report that forward elements of the 8th Army have been in contact with the enemy west of Zu- ara. Our troops, advancing westwards from this coastal town, are now entering upon the marshy country, stretching .along the Libyan seaboard. In to-day’s communiqué there is no mention of the southern col umn, or of the troops in the centre, who entered TJjinisia on Saturday. MESSINA RAID American heavy bombers yesterday made a heavy attack on messina, the second in two days. Of the enemy fighters, which tried to intercept the big American planes, three were damaged. The Italians admit great damage to buildings in the town. An enemy destroyer was successfully attacked off Pantellaria island, and left listing. Small shipping off the Tunisian coast was also attack- <ed with good results.' All of these operations cost us only •three planes. BIZERTA BOMBED Both American and RAF air craft have been busy over Tu- nisia over the week-end. — A successful attack on Bizerta by American heavy bombers left large fires burning, and the airfield at Gabes netted the de- struction of several Axis air- craft on the ground. Altogeth- er, 19 enemy aircraft were ac- counted for during the day. GERMAN 66 TON TANKS To-day’s communiqué men- tions a series of minor engage- ments north-west of Sfax, where Allied troops are count- er-attacking, following the six mile Axis break-through on Saturday, when German tanks, infantry and artillery launch- ed a strong attack against the French positions in this area, penetrating their defences, and were halted just within artill- ery range of the village of Sidi Bon Zid. Unofficial reports state that the Germans have succeeded in getting a consid- erable number of their 66 ton tanks, the “Mark VI”, much heavier than anything they have as yet employed in North Africa, over from Sicily, but there are no reports of them having been in action so far. PARACHUTE SPIES EXE- CUTED Radio Algiers reports that nine Axis parachutists, civilian clad, who landed behind the Allied lines, were executed this morning. {lenember Cafe Holt Langavegi 26. All Kinds 0f Refresh- ments. Mnsic. ____ t Back at Pearl Harbour, Col. Knox revealed as his opinion that the Japanese would be I cleared out of Guadalcanal within 30 days. This opinion he stated to be based on the evi- dent fact that the Japanese had lost all hope of being able to relieve their troops cornered on the island. UNDER FIRE The Japanese made their longest attack on Guadalcanal, lasting seven hours, while Col. Knox and Admiral Nimitz were there. In the New Hebri- des they had another taste of the enemy’s inefficiency in the air against Allied defences, — Laval’s •''Storm Troop Chief Killed. London, February lst. The president of the French Soldier’s Legion, a kind of Fasc- ist storm-troops founded by Laval, was shot dead in Lyons yesterday. The man who fired the §hot escaped on a bicycle. MARSEILLE DEMOLITION It is reported from Marseill- es, that the demolition of the evacuated “Old Port” quarter has already begun, in compli- ance with Nazi orders. REYKJABIO ”ÁÐd One Was Beantifar with ROBERT CUMMINGS LARAINE DAY JANE MUIR when the Japanese came over during their stay, attempting to bomb military targets. RAIDS ON TOKYO COMING? Col. Knox said that there were good prospects of another raid on Tokyo, but refused to be drawn out as to the time, when this might take place. “But the Japs had better start prepara- tions as soon as possible,” the Colonel said. Mnssolini’s Ghief Of Oeneral Staff Dismissed London, February lst. Mussolini, not to be outdone by Hitler, let it be come known over the week-end that he had also sacked his Chief of Staff, General Cavallero, who was said to have asked to be relie- ved of his office on account of his health. He is succeeded by General Ambrosio. During Cavallero’s office It- aly has lost the whole of her overseas empire, an achieve- ment likely to impair even a fairly robust Fascist constitu- tion. S. W. Pacific. London, February lst. General MacArthur’s bomb- ers have again made wide- spread attacks on enemy bases, airfields and supply ports. One of their main targets was Rabaul, where a large con- centration of Japanese shipp- ing was centred. It was diffi- cult to assess the damage in- flicted, but results are believed to have been good. The land fighting in the Mu- bo region, 15 miles south of Salamaua, has been sporadic, and no important change is re- ported.
