'Dnnbirk' For Germans ln Slght
Soviet Blaek Sea Fleet Aetive
Another Nazi Army Threatened
95th Raid On
Hambnrg
R.A.F, Blow
Against U. Boats
London, February 4th.
The Royal Air Force last
night switched its attention
írom Cologne to Hamburg, —
which was raided for the sec-
ond time in a week.
The attack is officially des-
cribed as heavy, and constitut-
ed another great blow in the
concentrated offensive against
the U-boats, as Hamburg is
Germany’s main U-boat pro-
duction centre. The town has
consequently received a great
deal of attention from our bom
bers. This was the 95th raid on
this city, which at one time had
a population of one and a three
quarter of a million, being Ger-
many’s second largest city, and
one of the most heavily defen-
ded. The raid cost us 16 air-
craft.
Violent Dogfights
Reports have come in to show
that our planes have to-day
been out in force over North-
Western Germany. No official
news has been received, but
messages indicate that there
have been many violent dog-
fights as the German fighters
went up to meet the challenge.
Raid On Britain .
Early last night a few Ger-
man raiders apperaed over the
north-east coastal area, dropp-
ing bombs at scattered points.
These caused little damage, and
no reports of casualties have
been receivd. One of the raid-
- ers was destroyed.
London, February 4th.
In the Caucasus, the Russians are driving the Germans to-
wards the sea. Axis troops trying to cross the Kersch Straits,
are being heavily shelled. Such is the plight oj the Germans. The
last railway link cut between Rostov and the Caucasus has been
cut.
Moscow messages report to-
day that great gaps are now
being cut in the enemy defen-
ces all the way from the Cau-
casus to Central Russia. Vital
railway and supply lines have
been straddled by the Red Ar-
my, and encircled enemy gar-
risons wiped out. The Russian
drive in some sectors in even
faster than it was at the beginn
ing of the offensive and in the
Caucasus, where the German
army is retreating towards the
Kerch Straits and the Sea of
Azov, it begins to look as though
Hitler may lose another army,
or at any rate, most certainly,
will lose a lot of heavy equip-
ment.
Germans Trapped
Having cut the last railway
link between the German Cau-
casian army and Rostov by the
capture of Kushevskaya, our
Allies. are proceeding to deal
with the two forces separately.
South of Rostov the enemy is
being steadily pressed into the
extreme north-western corner
of the area, and the trapped
Germans must now choose be-
tween the hazardous journey
across the Sea of Azov, or that
across the Kerch Straits. In eit
her case it seems most prob-
able that the Germans will
have to abandon their heavy
equipment. Reports being rece-
ived indicate that the enemy
is already crossing at Kerch,
and suffering heavy casualties
in doing so. Guns of the Russi-
an Black Sea Fleet are playing
a part in these operations, with
results not at all pleasant for
the Nazis.
25 Miles From Rostov
Three Soviet columns are
closing in on Rostov, from the
north, south and east. One of
these, thát advancing from
Salsk, is only 25 miles away
from the town. An added thre-
at lies in the capture of Kras-
nyliman, announced last night,
a place situated between Khar
kov and Voroshilovgrad. To-
day our Allies announce the
capture of six more places in
this region, where a successful
Russian drive would outflank
both Kharkov and Rostov.
Axis Ships Snnh
London, February 4th.
An Admiralty communiqué
gave news success by British
submarines in the Central Me-
diterranean. ln the past jew
days they have sunk one anti-
submarine enemy vessel and
nine supply ships. '
In addition, one large north
bound Axis transport in the
IGulf of Gabes, as well as a
large enemy vessel of a trans-
port type in the Messina Straits
J are both believed to have been
sunk, and another four ships
have been damaged. Most of
ships certainly sunk were ac-
counted for by gun fire.
Mosquitos
In Malta
London, February 4th.
It has been disclosed that
Mosquitos, the world’s jast-
ed light bombers, are now
based in Malta, and are op-
erating in the Middle East
zone with the same success
they have enjoyed here in
Europe.
Suspects Freed
Sequel to Darlan
Assasstnation
London, February 4th.
In North Africa nine people,
who had been arrested in con-
nection with the assassination
of Admiral Darlan, have been
released unconditionally, while
two others have been released
conditionally, and told to stay
in their homes.
Fortresses Over
fiermany
London, February 4th.
It was revealed here late to
night that American Flying
Fortresses had attacked North
West Germany during daylight
to-day. Cloud conditions prev-
ented results to be seen. — A
number of enemy fighters wre
destroyed. Five of t he giant
American planes failed to re-
turn.
