Bob Montgomery, one of the
top ranking challengers for the
lightweight title has a defense
job with a shipbuilding firm
in Philly, but he hopes to find
time to continue his ring car-
eer as a side issue. Bob is a
ciose friend of Connie Mack,
and used to train occasionally
with the A’s.
HOCKEY
When Doug Bentley, the
Blackhawk Star, left for his
home in DeLisle Saskatchewan
last week he took with him a
check for one grand, a practi-
cal token of the esteem of Ow-
ner Fred. MacLaughlin for
Bentley’s play this past season,
during which he tied the all-
,time scoring record of 73 po-
ints. Rival club owners are
hoping that he won’t use the
bonus to further the hockey
education of his 4 younger
brothers who are not yet in the
league.

Bob Feller, former big league
pitcher, is now a gun captain
in the United States Navy. —
Feller joined the Navy some
time ago as a physical instruc-
tor but later applied for gunn-
ery school. Now a chief specia-
list, he captains an anti-air-
craft crew on a U.S. warship.
Here he is shown besides his
gun dressed in cold weather
garb.
Detroit Red Wings may be as
unpopular with opponents and
the fans of other cities as a
rubber check, but the Montreal
crowd think he is the cats for
they presented him with a po-
pularity trophy, despite the
fact that he spends as much
time in the penalty coop there
as anywhere else.
The reason a player takes so
much time in selecting a stick
after he breaks one, is that they
are numbered the same as golf
clubs. “Please give me a five
iron, Coach” —.
One of the surprises in the
recent campaign, although not
of the same magnitude as the
collapse of the New York
Rangers, was the sensational
play of young Paul Bibault, —
cat-like goalie for the Montreal
Canadians. The youngster was
' especially brilliant in the
Stanley Cup Playoffs.

CRICKET
This year’s cricket season at
Lords, the fourth of the war,
promises to be more attractive
than ever. Top of the bill is
England v. The Dominions, to
be held on August 2nd and 3rd.
There are to be two matches
between the Army and the R.
A. F. and the programme also
includes London County v.
British Empire, England v. The
Dominions, and the Royal
Navy v. the Army. The admis-
sion charge is 6d., consider-
ably less than in pre-war days
and the proceeds of all games
are for charity.
One popular figure who will
not be there is Flight Lieut.
F.G.H. Chalk, D.F.C., captain
of Kent County Cricket Club for
the last two seasons before the
war, who is reported missing.
He won his D.F.C. in July; '41,
when air-gunner of a bomber.
RACING
The fixture list for the first
half of the Jockey Club season
is on the same lins as last
year, except that there are to
be five meetings at Ascot. The
Derby will be run at Newmark
et on June 19th, the Oaks on
June 18th, the Two Hundred
Guineas on May 18th, the Co-
ronation Cup and the Queen
Mary stakes on June 18th.
Freddie Fox, former cham-
pion jockey and twice winner
of the Derby, recently paid a
visit to Mentmore, at the invi-
tation of Lord Roseberry. He
saw Blue Peter, Lord Rose-
berry’s Derby winner of 1939,
and says that he has, to use
Freddie’s own words, “devel-
oped into a beautiful horse, to
put it mildly — he is now a
truly magnificent specimen of
the thoroughbred stallion.”

Recently we heard about a
certain woman who wrote to
the OPA chief saying that she
would go without sugar before
she ever consented to put her
age on a Government applica-
tion form. We could’nt help
wondering what she intends to
do when clothes rationing com
es into effect.

It is reported that *French
sailors now in New York are
deserting to join de Gaulle in
London. Their main complaint
seems to be that they don’t like
the taste of the Vichy water
they still have to swallow.

Some Mexicans have warn-
ed that the emphasis on Ame-
rican might in newsreels is
being overdone. Probably the
same guys who used to com-
plain that there was’nt enough
might to overdo.
