Britain s Sixth War Budget
Porchase Tax 100%: Drinks, Tobacco Dearer
London, April 12th. The Chancellor oj the Exchequer, Sir
Kingsley Wood, to-day introduced Britain’s 6th War Budget in
the House oj Commons.
Sir Kingsley revealed that
the cost of the war has now
reached £1/3,000,000,000, and
is now costing Britain £13,-
000,000 a day, as compared
with £5,000,000 a day in ’40.
44% of all expenditure has
been met by current revenue.
BRITAIN’S LEASE-LEND
The Chancellor also reveal-
ed that the amount of Lease-
Lend aid from Amrica receiv-
ed by Britain is not greater
than what Britain has accom-
modated other United Nations
with under the same scheme.
Russia has received £170,000-
000 worth of munitions alone.
Sir Kingsley announced a
number of increases in taxati-
on, and said that the people of
Britain would have to pay
more for their tobacco, drinks
and entertainments in order
to ensure Allied victory. Pur-
chase-tax on various göods is
to be '"’~eased to 100% above
pre-v* ~:ces.

Bob Feller, former mound ace for the Cleveland Indians and
now a chief specialist in the United States Navy, kisses his bride,
the former Virginia Winther, after their marriage in Waukegan,
111. Lieut. Clarence Campbell of the Navy, former Cleveland
outfielder and Feller’s roommate, was best man. The couple
spent a short honeymoon in New York before Feller reported for
duty aboard ship.
Italy’s Last Heavy
Cruisers Smashed
London. Monday. It is now
known that the heavy Italian
cruiser Trieste, which along
with another heavy Italian
cruiser was attacked by Ame-
rican heavy bombers in har-
bour, has since sunk. The oth-
er cruiser was severely dam-
aged. It is believed that these
two were the last Italian hea-
vy cruisers left in fighting
condition.

spiracy has been discovered in
Bulgaria to overthrow the go-
vemment, depose the king and
set up democracy, and that
many arrests have been made.

British Subs Harry
Axis Shipping
London. The British Admir-
alty announces that over the
week-end British submarines
torpedoed 15 Axis ships in the
Mediterranean, sinking at least
eight of them.
Among the vessels hit were
three large supply ships, and
one large tanker. Two of the
supply ships are believed to
have been sunk, and the tank-
er also.
