2 DAILY POST DAILY POST Ls published by BlaSahringurinn. Editors: S. Benediktsson. A. L. Merson. Office: 12, Austurstræti. Tel. 3715. Reyiijavík. Printed by Alþýðuprentsmiðjan Ltd. Friday, May 7, 1943 Reykjavik Letter ”IN WHICH WE SERVE” “Morgunblaðið” gives very favourable reviews to two íilms which are shortly to be showrn at Tjarnarbíó. One of them is the Noel Coward film, “In Which We Serve.” It shows the story of a British destroyer during the war, from the time the keel was laid shortly be- fore the war to the moment when it was sunk in the Battle of Crete. The reviewer descri- bes the film as excellently pro- duced, filmed and acted, and he says that while Noel Coward was making the film, he came to Akureyri in a British destro- yer in the summer of 1941. SOVIET WAR FILM The other picture is the So- viet war film “One Day of War.” It was taken by over 100 Russian cameramen in manjy different parts of the Soviet Union on the same day — June 12th 1942. The film has been very well reviewed in Britain. The Morgunblað writ- er says it shows well the suff- erings which the Soviet people are enduring; the vigour of the Red Army soldiers and the great productive potentialities in Russia. ONE WAY STREETS The Harbour Directors have decided to propose to the Town Council that a system of one way traffic be established in the streets round the dock area NAVIGATION SCHOOL The School of Navigation in Reykjavík closed its winter term last Friday. It was esta- blished 50 years ago. WASTE OF WATER The Reykjavík water-works engineer has written to the Town Council urging the nec- essity of sparing use of water, in view of frequent shortage Terror In Yugoslavla 823,000 Serbs Murdered Here are some details of German terror in occupied Yugo- slavia, received by the Yugoslav Government in London. “Between December 9 and 13, 1942, more than 3,000 in- nocent person were arrested in Belgrade as supporters of Gen. Mihailovitch, and on Christ- mas Eve 300 were shot, on Christmas Day 3,000, and on Boxing Day 900 more, includ- ing 68 officers who were in Belgrade at the time as prison ers-of-war on leave. So far the Germans have published the named of only 350 of the vic- tims, but other • lists are tó be published. 27.000 SHOT IN BELGRADE Altogether, reports have reached London of the shooting of 27,000 persons in Belgrade in the course of 1942. Conditi- ons in the prisons are shock- ing. The Gestapo packs its vic- tims in small rooms in such numbers that they cannot lie down and keeps them starved so that large numbers die of sheer exhaustion. Sanitary ar- rangements simply do not ex- ist. 'PROVOCATION In all this terrorisation the Gestapo reveals a fiendish pur pose, for their choice is invari ably of leading citizens and the best of the younger genera tion. The Gestapo has also in- troduced provocatory methods — sending secret agepts about the country trying to trick pe- ople into revealing their true sympathies by making collecti- ons of money in Mihailovitch’s name. Those persons who give contributions are listed, ar- rested, and shot. TORTURE Major Kalebitch, a chief constable of a county, has been shot. The accusation levelled against him was that of colla- boration with Mihailovitch, — the collaboration consisted in over the winter. The Inner Council has therefore proposed S that the spraying of water ^ from hoses for watering gard- ^ ens, washing clothes and clean S ing cars, be forbidden ,and al- ^ so that the public be warned ^ not to let water run excessive- s ly during laundry and kitchen j 8 operations. ^ refusing to arrest and execute innocent civilians. It is stated on good authority that before execution Major Kalebitch was tortured, by being stripp- ed naked and rolled over brok- en glass. BESTÍALITT Numerous other reports go to show that the German com mander in occupied Serbia, has begun to carry out his re- cent threat to shoot one hundr ed Serbs for every act of sa- botage in their part of the country, and this terrorisation, as we have stated, is directed primarily against leading citi- zens and youth. But besides the numerous instances of systematic slaughter, there are individual cases of bestiality — such as the case of a girl named Mieva Miyatovitch, of Ivanica. A German military car abducted her, she was rap- ed en route, and then tossed out on to the road, dead. ITALIAN EVIDENCE The total figure of the Yugo slav sacrifice is appalling. The Italian Governor of Montene- gro recently stated, in a priv- ate conversation, that accord- ing to Italian statistics the to- tal number amounts to 823,- 000 persons, counting the Ser- bian population alone. When to this deliberate destruction of life by the enemy we add the hunger conditions prevail- ing in Serbia, Montenegro and Dalmatia, and the number of deaths daily from starvation, we can obtain some idea of the horror brought by the Axis New Order. SILENCE IS GOLDEN • BE A HOARDER The Kentucky Derby It was no surprise that Count Fleet, a 2—5 favorite, won the 69th running of the Louisville classic by 2 and a half lengths last week, but it was unfortunate that Ocean Wave, the best of the remain- ing nags, had to be scratched a few hours before post time be- cause of a cracked hoof. There were but ten entries in the in the field and the winner’s price was only 2.80. Jockey Longden rode a masterful race, easing his mount into the lead at the 3/8 marker, and from then on it was just a breeze. Blue Swords and Slide Rule picked up the place and show money, but the winner’s time was a rather disappointing 2:- 04 for the 1V4 mile route. — Burnt Cork lived up to his. name by finishing last—the dog! His owner is the extrem- ely popular éddie Anderson. the “Rochester” of radio and screen fame, but íhe comedian will need all his fast answers to explain away that one. A Year Ap Today Corregidor falls, after four hours of unequal hand- to-hand combat. 10,000 kill- : ed or captured. British occupation of Ma- dagascar continuing in face l of considerable resistance. Diego-Suarez surrenders. Coral Sea battle nears its end after three days of fighting. News In Brief London:— German controlled Vichy radio has said that move- ments reported simultaneously from Gibraltar harbor and from Algerian waters may point to a largescale attack against Sicily and Sardinia.
