RACING
Harness racing in New York
State has been centralized at
the Empire City track at Yonk-
ers. Because of the well-known
transportation difficulty, plans
have been formulated for one
continuous 30-days meet to take
care of the whole season’s end-
eavor at one time. At Suffolk
Downs, the important $50,000
Massachusetts Handicap was
taken easily by “Market Wise”
paying the fancy odds of 22 to
1. “Salto” grabbed off the pla-
ce position, and “Don Bingo”
(Bing Crosby’s nag) came in
3rd. The favorite, “Woodford
Lad”, was the worth of the “al-
so rans.” . . In the $50,000
Stars and Stripes Handicap at
Arlington Park, “Rounders”
(from Valdina Farms) took
first place honors in a heated
stretch drive with “Thumbs
Up” who finished 2nd, and
“Mariage” who captured the
show position. Lucky bettors
collected $13. for 2 on the winn
er.....
BASEBALL
Lonnie Frey of the Reds is
generally conceded to be the
slickest bunter in the Majors,
now that Phil Rizzuto is play-
ing for the Navy. . . Howie
Krist of the Cards and Ace Ad-
ams of the Giants are waging a
stirring battle for the distinc-
tion of being the premier reli-
ef twirler in the N. L. Krist
recently was credited with
winning both ends of a double
header, and Adams always p-
pears in more contests than any
other heavier in the loop...
They say the new Brooklyn
shortstop, John Barkley, is the
genuine article, especially in
the field. He can make the
play on slow bounders with a
Sunday hop as well as on those
hot smashes, and he can range
far, either to his left or right.
This 28-year old newcomer was
playing semi-jpro ball around
Wichits, Kansas, when a Dodger
scout noticed his spectacular
play and signed him up. He
stacks up pretty well as a stick-
er, is adept at lying down
bunts, and is plenty fast on the
baselines. In his earlier days
Barkley had a lengthy trial
with the Browns, and although
he could not make the time
then, this experienc left him as
cool and steady as a veteran big
leaguer. A few years ago he
dropped out of organized ball,
but is more than glad he dec-
ided to take another fling at
the game. Probably his out-
standing point is his strong
thrownig arm, and he does not
throw a handfull of gravel
along with the ball like some
other infielders we have
known.......Old Rabbit Mar-
anville, now 52, is still playing
a good brand of ball only this
time it’s in a Boston semi-pro
league. This famous infielder
began his twenty-odd year
stretch in the N. L. with the
Braves 30 years ago, and will
be long remembered as the
author of the vest pocket catch
on pop flies. In all his career
he only dropped one of them!!

the relief would start as the
Axis forces are driven from
the occupied territories.
Sayre added: “There prob-
ably won’t be enough food left
to give everyone the ration he
