B. A. F. Entertainment
In presenting the dramatic
entertainment ‘Light and
Shade’ at the Polar Bear cin-
ema on Wednesday, Thursday,
and Friday of the current
week, the Royal Air Force
Headquarters (Unit) players
launched upon the first of a
series of plays to be given by
them during the forthcoming
winter.
Their first effort is a pleas-
ing combination of comedy and
thrills in the form of three one
act plays “Birds of a Feather”,
“The Monkey’s Paw” and
“Money Makes a Difference”;
and a comedy duologue of to-
pical interest entitled “The
’ole in the Road”.
Padre Badham the producer
has gathered together an en-
thusiastic and capable cast for
his opening production. Squa-
dron Leader Beringer, Flying
Officer Jones and Flying Offi-
cer Carr excelled in difficult
character studies, whilst Miss
Joan Wassell, the only woman
member of the company gave
a versatile portrayal in two
contrasting roles. S./L. Whal-
ley Flying Officer Taylor and
L. A. C. Fox were among the
other members of the cast to
give noteworthy performance.

New York. — A so-called ex-
plosive rivet contains a charge
which is detonated by heat
when the. rivet is being used to
clamp two metal plates to-
gether. Now the development
of a rapid-heating explosive
rivet gun is announced by a
U.S. war plant. The gun is
light, portable, inexpensive and
easy to handle.
A low-voltage, high-current
circuit passes through two con-
ducting leads terminating in a
high-resistance metal tip. The
resistance of the tip causes a
high temperature over a re-
stricted area. The operator
holds the rivet in place with
the gun and squeezes the
trigger. This closes the circuit,
causing the tip to heat almost
instantly. When one rivet is
detonated, the trigger is re-
leased and the operation is re-
peated on the next.
New York. — American ship-
yards delivered approximately
40 percent more oil tankers
during the first seven months
of 1943 than during the entire
year of 1942, the U.S. Maritime
Commission reports.
Increase in tanker produc-
tion is attributed to wartime
standardization of design, to
mass production and prefabri-
cation methods, and to the all-
out effort by workers and man-
agement in the U.S. shipyards.
Tanker production is in full
swing. Production schedules
call for the delivery of 511 ad-
ditional tankers of all types
during the next 17 months.
That is an average of 30 a
month, or abou.t 140 percent
more than during the first
seven months of this year.
