Trade Agreement
WASHINGTON. — The Sfa-
te Department has announced
that President Roosevelt on
September 30th, issued the sup
plementary proclamation putt-
ing into effect the reciprocal
trade agreement between the
United States and Iceland,
signed at Reykjavík August
27th.
The President acted in ac-
cordance with Article Seven-
teen of the agreement which
provided that it would enter
into force 30 days after ex-
change of the proclamation of
the U. S. for the instrument
of ratification of the Re-
gent of Iceland. Following this
exchange a month ago, the
President was to issue a sup-
plementary proclamation sett-
ing the date of the agreement
entry into force.
London, Oct. 6th.
It was revealed to-day that
the record output of Allied ship
yards, coupled with the reduc-
tion in the sinkings of Allied
shipping by U-boats, has put
forward the schedule for the
Allied invasion of Europe by
six months.
The Allied have now at their
disposal three million tons
more of shipping than was ex-
pected this year.
Mediterranean
Activities
London, Oct. 7th.
In the Mediterranean, French
forces in Corsica are rounding
up isolated German forces in
the north-eastern tip of the is-
land, and yesterday took sever
al hundreds prisoner. Great
quantities of booty, includinjj
food stores, equipment and am-
munition dumps are now being
counted.
British submarines in the
Mediterranean have recently
sunk six enemy ships and da-
maged two others.
In the Balkans, Yugoslav for
ces have fought a successful ac-
tion against German panzer
troops in the Istrian peninsula.
Here, a German tank column
attempted to break through the
Patriot lines between Fiume
and Triest, but were beaten
back after having had six
tanks destroyed and four oth-
ers damaged.
Latest Cairo messages to-
day report that Yugoslav Pa-
triots have captured the island
of Lussin, 35 miles south of Fi-
ume, on the Gulf of Quernero.

For the first time in three
months the Moscow communi-
qué reports no important
changes on the Eastern Front.
Messages from ' the Russian
capital say that the Red Army
is using the lull imposed by
the autumn rains to consolida-
te the great Soviet gains. How
ever, sharp clashes are still re-
ported from the Vitebsk sect-
or, where Russian troops con-
tinue to improve their position.
Berlin to-day reports a new
Russian threat to the German
defences at Nevel, some 60
miles north of Vitebsk, stating
that here the Red Army is at-
