NEIL HAMILTON TO BE STARTED AGAIJM The signing of Neil Hamilton, former silent screen star, to a new contract is a Hollywood news event. With the exception of a few unimportant roles, Hamilton has not been active in films for years . Ronald Colman, William Po- well and Richard Barthelmess were companions of Hamilton 15 years ago, and while Hamilton held the pace for a few years, Colman and Powell outdistanc- ed him and Barthelmess retired. Hamilton will co-star with Claudette Colbert, Monty Wooll- ley, Shirley Temple and others in “Since You Went Away” in his first role under the new contract. ROBERT DONAT INHERITS LESLIE HOWARD ROLE Leslie Howard, who lost his life when plane in which he was flying from Lisbon to London was shot down, was to have made the new version of “If Winter Comes.” This story of the last war has been brought up to date and relates to the present conflict. The picture will be made in England, with Carole Landis, Hollywood screen star, shown at her home in Hollywood, California, where she recently returned from a a tour of U.S. Army camp sover- seas. Her next picture will be based on her experiences while entertaining U.S. troops. in “Behind the Rising Sun.” At first the Chinese refused to play the roles, but when they were told the plot and saw that it would show the American people the true character of the enemy, they readily consented. MYRNA LOY HOLDS UP “THIN MAN” SERIES While Myrna Loy toys with the idea of giving up her film ccareer, plans to resume the “Thin Man” series of mystery films are being held in abey- ance. EX-AMBASSADOR KEEPS PROMISE TO STARS Joseph E. Davies, former U. S. Ambassador to Russia, made a promsie to Ann Harding and Walter Huston when he visited the set where they were making th film version of Davies’ book, “Mission to Moscow.” Recently he kept that promise when he sent each of them a Russian ikon which he obtained on his last trip to Moscow as “mailman” for President Roose- velt, as he calls himself.
