LISTINGS
Music and nightlife events usually
start around 21:00, unless otherwise
stated. Pubs close at 01.00 on
weekdays and much, much later on
weekends. For those just wanting
to party, the pubs and clubs don´t
get crowded until after midnight on
weekends, although Thursday is a
semi-official night out.
Gaukur á Stöng, February 18th
BACON
It’s not just for breakfast anymore. I
first saw this band at Klink og Bank,
expecting the worst with a name like
“Bacon,” and was mindblowingly
proven wrong. I said it then and I’ll
say it now: Bacon are the Icelandic
Butthole Surfers (pre-1990), and by
that I mean innovative, surprising,
flashback-inducing compositions.
Sharing the stage with Bacon will
be Limill, Hoffmann, Ensími and
Brain Police. Leave the blotter acid
at home and see them all at Gaukur
á Stöng.
Gaukur á Stöng on February 25th
THE SHOW THAT YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST
SEE OR ELSE COMMIT SEPUKKU
Every issue of Grapevine will now pick one show out of our listings to rec-
ommend above all others. If you don’t see at least that show, then nothing
short of killing yourself will ever erase your shame. In this issue, the show to
see features punk veterans Fræbbblarnir, old school rap clowns Dáðadrengir
and lysergic rockers Bacon. Three bands, three genres of music, one fantas-
tic fucking show. See them all at Gaukur á Stöng on February 25, or start
sharpening your Hanto knife now.
Nasa, February 11th
HJÁLMAR AND JAGÚAR
I gotta be honest. When I first heard that there was an Icelandic funk outfit,
I was really suspicious. When did The Funk come to Iceland? Who dares
to say they can bring The Funk to the people? Jagúar does, and then some.
Never mind the virtuosity of the musicians. The real secret to their success is
their live act. Anyone not dancing at this show, which also features award-
winning reggae sensation Hjálmar, should be checked for a pulse
Ömmukaffi February 24th
UHU
Jazz band UHU played on the
Grapevine boat for our first party of
the summer of 2004. I have pretty
high standards when it comes to
jazz, and have been known to throw
bottles if I need to. Well, trust me
– there was no bottle-throwing
done at UHU. We were all too busy
enjoying them. Opening for them
will be Gerald Gadwa, a musician
that the Marketting Director himself
invited to come to Iceland. If that
ain’t an endorsement, I don’t know
what is. February 24 at Ömmukaffi,
admission 500kr.
Grand Rokk, February 18th
ROKK Í REYKJAVÍK REVIVAL
Do you remember the days when punk stood for individuality, class struggle
and the DIY ethic, before it became swallowed up by corporate music and
marketted as another cheap fashion product? I barely do, but if you’re curious
to know (or be reminded) what it was like, then you’re best bet is to check out
a few of the bands who were a part of punk’s original movement. Icelandic
punk legends Vonbrigði, Fræbbblarnir and Taugadeildin will destroy all
Good Charlotte fans (only in the musical sense, unfortunately) February 18 at
Grand Rokk.
