Students discover the secrets of Science... Zoe Bitzes and Anthony Figueroa, both in the 3rd grade, make a filter to create clean water as part of Science Fun Day at A.T. Mahan Elementary School, Mar. 22. Throughout the day military and civil- ian volunteers taught children about some of the more fun and inter- esting aspects of science, such as “bubbleology” and how to make balloons race. In addition to bubbleology, students learned how water and air pressure influence the world around them. Though the students learned a lot about science, they also gained insight into the community they call home. According to 6th grade teacher Zora Gaymon, having military members from around the base interact with the students left a big impression. “It makes a big difference to the students when they see military members take the time to volunteer at the school. It increas- es the involvement and student interest in the subject of science. It also demonstrates to the students that they are valued members of the community,” said Gaymon. The elementary school holds Science Fun Day once a quarter. (Photo by J02 Jean Ross) Page 14 The White Falcon March 29, 2002
