Sept. 8 1779: Bjami Palsson, the first appointed chief physician in Iceland died at the age of 60.
Sept. 8, 1931: The first legislation about automobiles in Iceland was ratified.
Sept. 8, 1989: Four handicapped individuals came to Reykjavik alter five days on the road from Akureyri in wheelchairs. Their average speed was six kilo-
meters per hour.
Sept. 9, 1942: A British plane crashed in a potato garden in Ellidarardalur Valley near a house. The pilot managed to aim the plane from the house by the
garden at the last minute.
Sept. 10, 1908: The first general election to the Icelandic Parliament or Althing took place.
Sept. 10,1911: A memorial statue of Jon Sigurdsson was unveiled by the Government House. The statue was moved to Austurvollur in front of the
Parliament building in 1931.
Sept. 10, 1942: A German bomber shot at two farms in Breiddalsvik and at five motorboats in East Iceland. There were damages to houses in the area, but
no one was injured.
Sept. 11, 1755: An earthquake happened in the north of Iceland. Many homes in Husavlk and a few farms in Tjomes collapsed. Two boats sunk from a
tidal wave caused by the earthquake.
Sept. 11, 1953: The government of Olafur Thors took power.
Sept. 11, 1976: A passenger jet from TWA was hijacked. The domestic flight stopped for two hours at NAS Keflavik before taking off and heading to Paris
where the Croatia hijackers surrendered.
Sept. 12, 1949: The heat at Dalatangi in MjoifjorSur rose to 26 degrees Celsius. This was a record for Iceland in the month of September.
Sept. 12, 1962: David Ben Gurion, the prime minister of Israel, came to Iceland for an official visit.
Sept. 13, 1894: The Mercantile Holiday was first celebrated by the Reykjavik Mercantile Society, which consisted of an outdoor festival at Artun. The fes-
tival took place where the Museum of the Living Past is today.
Sept. 13, 1934: The first Rotary Club of Reykjavik was founded in Iceland.
Sept. 13, 1981: The Borgarfjordur Bridge officially opened.
Sept. 14, 1879: The Reykjavik Cathedral was officially consecrated again after a major repair. The cathedral was first officially consecrated November 6,
1796.
Sept. 14, 1944: The actress Marlene Dietrich performed at the Tripoli Theater in Reykjavik. Among the guests invited were the President of Iceland and
the government. Dietrich stayed in Iceland for a few days entertaining American troops.
Sept. 14, 1950: The airplane Geysir crashed at Vatnajokull Glacier. The six crewmembers aboard the plane survived although it took four days to find the
plane.
Sept. 14, 1965: The British pop group The Kinks came to Iceland and entertained the Icelanders with eight concerts in four days. Every concert was sold
out.
Sept. 14, 1982: The third Icelandic President, Kristjan Eldjarn, died at the age of 65. He was the president of Iceland from 1968 to 1980.

day’s deposits, the loss is yours. There is no going
back. There is no drawing against the tomorrow.
You must live in the present on today’s deposits.
Invest it so as to get from it the utmost in health,
happiness and success! The clock is running. Make
the most of today.
To realize the value of ONE YEAR, ask one
of the extended Soldiers on the next troop flight
returning home from Iraq.
To realize the value of ONE MONTH, ask a
woman in the third trimester of her pregnancy.
To realize the value of ONE WEEK, ask the lov-
ers who are waiting to meet.
To realize the value of ONE HOUR, ask the
Sailor who just missed ship’s movement.

To realize the value of ONE MINUTE, ask the
student finishing the timed essay exam.
To realize the value of ONE SECOND, ask a
person who just avoided an accident.
To realize the value of ONE MILLISECOND,
ask the U.S. Olympic Men’s 4X100 relay team.
Treasure every moment given to you. Spend it
generously. Invest it wisely. And also realize what
you are receiving when someone desires to spend
their time with you. The clock is ticking in this
event called life, and time waits for no one. So aim
for a “personal best” performance everyday. Go
for the gold! Yesterday is history ... Tomorrow is
mystery ... Today is a gift... That’s why it’s called
the present!!

with breakfast, the curriculum is material from Dr.
Gene Getz’s, “The Measure of a Man”. It’s an
outstanding video series, taken from his well-known
book that God has used in other men’s faith and lives
in powerful ways.
Sunday School, CCD, Confirmation, Pioneer
Club, Youth Group and Bible Studies: The fall
schedule is ramping up. Everything is open to every-
one. Stop by the Chapel to see where, when and how
you can be blessed and be a blessing!
