The White Falcon - 27.10.2004, Side 2
The Naval Media Center’s radio program, “Talk
of the Town” airs Mondays at 2 p.m. on K104FM,
Thunder 1530, and Roller Channel 9. Monday,
October 25 Lynn Swisher the Housing Director and
JOCS Vince Dickens were the guests. Here are
some of the community issues they discussed:
Family Housing: Butt stops have gotten full at
family housing units around the base, but should be
emptied before the end of the week. The smoking
ban that says you must be more than 50 feet away
from the entrance of a building doesn’t apply in
family housing. Just don’t smoke at the entrance and
hopefully we can get everyone to use the butt stops
and not drop them in the grass or on the sidewalks.
Housing had a good year-end for family housing
dollars. We received almost $1 million dollars so we
are going to demolish some houses. This has been
a long time in coming. They are buildings 1000 to
1008. We’ve primarily had civilians living in them
over the last couple of years, but we’ve finally got-
ten the money to demolish them and we’ve only got
one more family to move out. We also got money to
replace the rusted out and corroded water tanks in
the Seahawk area. We’ll also be doing some paint-
ing in stairwells and common areas. 926 and 927
are still being renovated. They are scheduled to be
completed next summer. There are two more, 1614
and 1618 and those will be completed hopefully by
April next year. So there are still some renovations
going on. Those are the last four buildings that we
have programmed at this time.
We had a couple questions about the last couple
of holidays, if they happened on a Sunday; we
shifted the celebration to the Saturday before. In
particular, why are we shifting the celebration
of Halloween to Saturday instead of celebrating
it on the 31? [Cmdr. Todd Barclay, NAS XO] A
lot of bases throughout Europe are conducting their
trick-or-treating on Saturday evening. And they
believe maximum participation in the community
can be achieved by seeking trick-or-treat outdoor
events, with other events occurring on the base and
other MWR sponsored Halloween events. There’s a
ton of stuff happening on Saturday. Some examples
include the Chapel’s Harvest Festival, Up-all-night
costume bowling with prizes from 11 p.m. all night
long, Top of the Rock doing their 9 p.m - 3 a.m. cos-
tume contest with prizes, Costume Halloween party
at the Teen Center from 6 p.m. until they close. On
Friday the CDC and Youth Center will be holding
their parties Friday after school and the Polar Roller
Rink Friday bash from 6-10 p.m. with the party
being broadcast over K-104.1. It’s for everyone; kids
are more than welcome to this celebration.
Resident Satisfaction Survey: This is our report
card for family housing and this goes to our survey
and throughout the Navy. Everyone in our chain-of-
command sees the results of this and they want to
see how we compare with other activities within the
region and the Navy. Command representatives have
distributed them to their folks who live in family
housing. It is completely anonymous, once it is com-
pleted it goes into the mailbox and they are tallied
up and next spring sometime we will see the results.
Last year we did very well. For two of our neighbor-
hoods got A listing. That’s like an A report card. We
were the only naval activity that got two of those.
They look at how we provide service, the facility
itself and the amenities in the facility and how is the
maintenance program. There are a lot of different
categories. We were recognized for the best response
in the Navy last year. We had over 67% response last
year compared to the average of 20%.
What are we supposed to do if we have mold
in our housing units? I’ve tried cleaning it with
bleach, is there anything we can do to have hous-
ing come look at it: You should call your neighbor-
hood manager and have them come look at it. We’d
like to emphasize we’ve had the Naval Hospital look
at the mold and they have not found the dangerous
mold here in Iceland. It is all controllable through
ventilation. It’s important to ensure you open your
windows to allow air exchanges.
Mylar window project: The Housing Department
is doing a project to install Mylar in some of the
windows in the Seahawk housing area. This is
an anti-terrorism/force protection project. Some
people thought that it was being installed to protect
you from the glare of the sun, but this is used as a
preventive measure against shards of glass flying
around if a bomb blast were to occur.
Pole station covers: We’ve installed wire cages
over fire alarms in family housing. We tend to get
a lot of false alarms in family housing, so hopefully
this will help prevent some of these. This is impor-
tant because family housing must reimburse the fire
department for any false alarm calls. It works out to
about $6,000 every time a fire alarm is pulled.
Look in next week’s edition for the results of the
next “Talk of the Town.” E-mail your questions to
nmcfeedback@naskef.navy.mil or call the Naval
Media Center during the broadcast at 4615.
