Introducing Child Development Homes
After years of being called Family Child Care, FCC
has changed its name. The name change to Child
Development Homes, or CDH, is an effort to expand
and improve the home-based childcare program.
Child Development Homes provides childcare
for more than one hundred children here on NAS
Keflavik. Over thirteen thousand children are in the
program world-wide. The Navy Personnel
Command is hoping to expand and provide child-
care for nearly twenty thousand, five hundred chil-
dren by 2003.
The campaign to expand the program has many
facets. The most noticeable of course, is the name
change. The reasons for the name change from
Family Child Care to Child Development Homes is
to create a tie to the well-known Child Development
Center, or CDC. The CDC is known for its excep-
tional childcare by professionals in a safe, developmen-
tally appropriate environment. The Child
Development Homes program falls under similar reg-
ulations and guidelines, uses the same resources, and
both providers at the CDC and CDH receive the
same training.
The fuel behind this campaign is to provide
more quality childcare for Navy Families at a lower
cost, while still being cost effective for the Department
of the Navy. If you have questions concerning the name
change or the Child Development Homes program in
general call 7597.
Child Development Homes will be the new
name worldwide for Family Child Care. There are
79 Navy bases dtat are changing their names to
Child Development Homes. The name change is
expected to build the respect of home-based child
care professionals and recognize the hard work and
dedication that they bring to the community. We
Thanks Providers! Children, providers, par-
ents, and special guests were in attendance at the
Youth Center to celebrate the name change and
show appreciation to CDH providers .
would like the community to understand that the
home-based providers go through an extensive initial
training of more than 40 hours, monthly training on
various topics, and the Military Standardized Module
program. Each provider has an unannounced home
visit every month and has constant contact with the
CDH office. We would like to recognize all of our
CDH providers and would also like the community
to thank them and their families for serving our
community and supporting our military and civil-
ian personnel on this base.
