Located near the Walking Mall between the Supreme Court and the
National Theater, Tire Culture House reflects Iceland's past.
Reykjavik's
CULTURE
HOUSE
This is a treat and a truly
great experience for the entire
family. Now called The
Culture House, it used to be
The National Library and was
the first modem house in
Iceland. It re-opened as the
Culture House this past April
after a multi-million dollar ren-
ovation. This preserved build-
ing is widely admired as one
of Iceland's national treasures.
It opened to the public in
1909 and housed the National
Library and the National
Archives for much of the past
century. For several decades
the National Museum and
Natural History Museum
were also located there.
Although the library archives
and museums have all
moved, various items from
there are on exhibit in the
building, which is now named
the Culture House to reflect its
new and independent role.
There are many exhibi-
tions, including: "1000 years of
Christianity", "Exhibition
Library", which holds the first
Bible in Icelandic made in
1584. Also other exhibitions
include "Iceland on Ancient
Maps", "Emblems of Iceland",
which show the coat of arms
past and present, and the
"Vikings and the New
World." This one is definitely
for all of those history lovers
telling the history of the
Vikings and the new world.
There are also numerous other
rooms. All of these rooms can
be visited in one day taking
about 2 hours to tour.
On the bottom floor there
is a cafe' for delicious cakes
and coffee, and also a gift
shop, which holds great gifts
for any holiday. For groups,
tour guides can be used, but
for families and individuals
there are people around the
house that are happy to
answer any questions.
The price is 300Kr for
adults, and free for children-a
bargain for what this house
holds. It is an amazing place,
that no one should miss.
You can pick up some
information and get directions
from the MWR Tour Office
(Ext. 4200) located in the main
MWR building across the
street from the Viking Mall.
