Iceland's most famous coast guard ship, Thor, is now a mod- em and delicious restaurant. A perfect restaurant for families, singles, and unaccompanied, the ship has an incredible history. The restaurant and bar was even once the private quarters of the Icelandic President. Momentos and pictures are displayed throughout the entire ship depicting Thor's service as a Coast Guard vessel that played an important role in tire Cod War. During the Cod War, a struggle for protecting the Icelandic fishing grounds, the British Coast Guard would cut Icelandic fishing boat's nets and ram into the Icelandic Coast guard ships as Iceland attempted to increase their fishing territories. At times the Coast Guard ship Thor would get up to FIVE collisions a day. Finally in 1977, after quite a struggle with the British, fish- ing was extended to 200 miles. For many years Thor was used as a training school for peo- ple going into the Coast Guard until finally in 1985 it was decommissioned and sold for 1000 kronur. The ship itself has gone through an incredible renovation. The ship's interior was completely refurbished with oak and mahogany paneling, but you can still see the way it used to be through all of the memorabilia around the ship. Now a place for incredible food, Thor also gives you an extraordinary view. The menu offers a wide variety. Private par- ties can also be arranged. Tours of the ship are available for groups and there is live music on weekends. This is a place in Iceland that no one will ever be able to for- get. It is a memorable experience for anyone, no matter what age. Thor restaurant welcomes you to their unique "seafood restaurant on the sea" where a memorable and enjoyable evening awaits you. For more information you can contact the Thor Restaurant at 555-6171. The MWR Tour Office also runs a trip to the Thor for a "Cod War Dinner" the last Friday of every month. Phone 4200 for more details or visit the office located in the main MWR build- ing across the street from the Viking Mall. The Leisure Bulletin is a publication of MWR Marketing department.
