The "MWR Guy" Says Goodbye.
You probably first saw him at your Indoc. Then you witnessed him as one of the “Vinnys" get-
ting a $1000 haircut for Media-thon last Spring. He was everywhere preaching the gospel that
MWR was "first for fun!" Sadly, that legendary "MWR Guy" Brian Mckinney is leaving
NAS Keflavikfor Alaska (yes, they chose to go there!) Here are his closing words...
All good things must come to an end
and the end of my journey here in
Iceland has come. For the last 31/2 years
I have done many things and I've made
many friends. Iceland is a very special place, one that I will
never forget. From producing the "Leisure Bulletin" now the
Leisure Section, Channel 20, MWR's web site and just letting
you know what's going on around the base, has let me grow
professionally and personally. I would like to thank just a few
people for helping me get the job done and letting me enjoy
what I do. Although she has left the island, Misty Orlove for-
mer director of MWR was an understanding and helpful per-
son to work with. Ingi Thorgrimsson, thank you for all your
help in upgrading the Marketing office to what it is now,
helping me bridge the Icelandic gap with your humor and
understanding, and for your friendship. Dee Richrads, you
are a good leader and even with your busy schedule you
always found time for your people. When I needed to vent or
if I had an idea to better MWR, your open door policy has
allowed me to do so. Dolan Sparks, your enthusiasm has
brought a new light to MWR, and has rekindled the fire for
me. "If it got any better I couldn't stand it". Heather Deviney,
your professionalism and drive is a step above all. You have
taken your job to new heights loving every minute of it. Your
work-a-holic attitude has saved me many times and the
knowledge that I have gained from you is priceless. My wife
Michelle, thank you for loving heart, your understanding and
patience. And last but not least, the crew down at the Naval
Media Center, thank you for your support in marketing
MWR, for letting me "Rock" the base with that 80's show, and
for that badly needed haircut.
Not to sound like a Academy Award recipient but to all
the people that I have worked with (too many to name) and
to the people that I have come in contact with here at
NASKEF, thank you for making this last 3.5 years the best
years of my life.
