This year’s Independence Day cel-
ebrations kick off on Saturday July
3 at 8AM with a softball tournament
sponsored by the Public Works De-
partment. The rest of the day is
also filled with events, food, and
rides sure to bring together the base
residents in a fun and relaxing day
of celebrating American freedom.
The parade begins at 10AM from
the Commissary parking lot, goes
left, and loops back around to end in
front of the Viking Mall at approxi-
mately 11AM. The parade will fea-
ture a collection of classic cars from
the Classic Car Club of Iceland,
and a few Harley Motorcycles from
the Harley Riders Club of Iceland.
Following the parade will be
the National Anthem sung by
Don Johnson of the band Miss-
ing Stateside. Throughout the
day, various members of the band
will be deejaying for the crowd
from a setup in front of the gym.
Carnival rides also begin at
11AM. This year we have a wide
variety of rides for both chil-
dren and adults from the Ice-
landic carnival company Sprell.
Some of the highlights include:
•Ferris Wheel
•Swings
•Go Carts
•Inflatable Obstacle Courses
•Clown Castle
•Euro Bungee
•Orbitron NASA Simulation Ride
•SCAD Dive (weather pennitting)
You must be 18 years of age or older to
use the SCAD Dive which involves free
falling from a crane. Did we mention
that all of the above rides are FREE!!
Icelandic horses will also be avail-
able for rides with the kids. A
base photographer will be on
hand to take your child’s pic-
ture on the horses for a small fee.
The Harleys (sponsored by Navy
Autosource) will be on dis-
play after the parade in front of
the Polar Roller Rink. Be sure
to stop by for a chance at some
Harley memorabilia giveaways.
At approximately 1PM prizes
will be awarded at the DJ tent by
MWR for the Apple Pie and Chili
Contests, by the Cultural Aware-
ness Committee for the parade
floats, and MWR will also give
away 7 travel vouchers. There are
one $300, one $200, and five $100
travel vouchers to be given away.
Food vendors begin selling their
goods at 11AM as well. On
