country, their aims and aspirations, their struggles, and suc- cesses. Rome was not built in a day. What older immigrants have done, more recent arrivals may yet do. The problem of assimilation is not an easy one but we must solve it if we are to build a nation. In attempting a solution of that problem, I bespeak your sympathetic understanding of the newcomer, whether he be artisan, fisherman or peasant; whether he he Anglo-Saxon or Scandinavian, Teuton or Slav. Each may have his contribution to make. The newcomer of today is the raw material from which the Canadian of tomorrow will be made. 34
