ICELAND Volume VI, No. 2 July 22, 1966 57th FIGHTER INTERCEPTOR SQUADRON PRESENTED AWARD The 57th Fighter Interceptor Squadron (ADC) received the USAF Flying Safety Plaque for over 17.000 accident free flying hours. MEN OF THE MONTH SELECTED Bryan L. Waggoner III, AK3, LCpl Stewart A. Scott and A1C James R. Haley, were recently con gratulated on their selection as June's Men of the Month by RAdm Ralph Weymouth, commander Ice land Defense Force. The men were presented certificates of a- chievement and $25 checks by the admiral at ce- remonies held in his office Wednesday July 6. Airman of the Month, A1C Haley reported here April 30, 1966 from the Strategic Air Co- mmand base in Minot, N„ D„ Haley is serving an unaccompanied tour with the 57th FIS (ADC), where he works as a Command and Control Spe- cialist in the Combat Alert Center. He has a- ttended the USAF Judo Instructor School _ at Stead AFB, Reno, Nev. Airman Haley is a native of Lexington, Ky. He lists golfing and bow- ling as his favorite off-duty pastimes. His wife, Gladys M., is presently residing at Mi- not, N. D. Recognition is nothing new for June's Sai- lor of the Month. Petty Officer Waggoner re- ports that he was selected as Mess Cook of the Month while serving at NAAS Saufley Field, Pen- sacola, Fla. Waggoner reported here from Avi- ation Storekeeper "A" School in Memphis, Tenn., last July. He will leave next week for duty' with VAW-33 in Quonset Point, R. I. Petty Of- ficer Waggoner hails from Granite City, Ill. and likes to spend his off-duty hours swimming cooking, and horseback riding. Stewart A, Scott enlisted in Savannah, Ga. August, 1965 and served a stint at Camp Gei- ger, N. C. before reporting here ‘this January. He is with the Security Camp at Whale Bay. Scott is an avid fan of parachute jumping and got his start with the Savannah Sports Para- chute Club. He is at present trying to get in- terested personnel to start an Icelandic Para- chute club. Scott is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alan F. Scott of Meldrim, Ga. BIBLE SCHOOL BEGINS AUG. 1 The Naval Station vacation bible school will begin Aug. 1 and continue through Aug. 5 from 9 a.m. to noon. All children between the ages of four and 5 are invited to attend. Registration will be held Saturday July 30, at 10 a.m. at the A. T. Mahan High School. Immediately following the registration, a bike parade will be held for those children be- tween the ages of eight and 15. jL'hose living in Keflavik and wishing to at- tend the school ma^r catch the Navy bux at 8:50 at Vick's Rest, and returns at noon. The award was presented to Lt. Col. Joe H. Joiner, commander 57th F IS,' by Gen. Archie M. Burke, comman- der 37th Air Division in ceremonies at the base theatre on Wednesday Ju- ly 20, 1966. The award covers the period from 1963 to 1965. The 57th FIS provides fighter defense for the North Atlantic. It flies the F-102 Delta Dagger All-we- ather fighter interceptor. COST REDUCTION REPORT Defense Secretary Robert S. Me Namara has reported to President Jo hnson that savings of $4.5 million were ralized by DOD during FY66-400 million more than estimated. In reply the President said he was particularly encourage that the savings were made "despite the extraordinary demands of the Vietnam conflict". Secretary McNamara noted that savings of $6.1 billion a year by F Y69 and each year thereafter' have been set again as D0D* * * * 5s long range goal . The secretary's fourth annual progress report covering DOD's Cost Reduction Program states that actual accomplishments in each year have far exceeded the original goals ann- ounced in July 1962. Cumulative sa- vings over the five year period now exceed $14 billion. The report explains that the savings in FY66 were achieved at the same time "we were building up a military force of about 350,000 men in Southeast Asia..."
