THE WHITE FALCON
January 30, 1970
VP-26 ‘Orions’ help preserve those ‘friendly skies’
This week White Falcon photo-
grapher Dave Schuller took part
in one of Patrol Squadron 26's
combat air crew training flights.
For more than an hour and a
half Schuller and the 12-man crew
of a four-engine P3B turbo-prop
aircraft practiced bombing runs
and antisubmarine warfare (ASW)
drills.
The exercise included laying
smoke flares, which were used as
targets for both visual sightings
and electronic trackings. The
mission consisted of simulated
ditchings of plane and personnel
by flying the craft approximately
150 feet above water level. As
crewmembers remained strapped in
their ditching stations, the pi-
lots simulated landing as flatly
as possible on the water.
The photo at the top of Page 1
shows the interior view of the
P3B aircraft, which is used to
locate, track and plot the move-
ments of surface and subsurface
vessels. Its pilot, who must be
a senior lieutenant or above, is
assisted by a copilot who moni-
tors the flight instruments. Other
officers aboard include a tacti-
cal coordinator, who is a non-
flying officer, and a navigator,
who is the Junior pilot aboard.
