iczko's influence. He was the
permanent conductor from 1965 to
1968 and is expected to take over
again by the end of the season.
As in most orchestras, opera-
ting difficulties are present.
The 900 - seat theater is amply
filled, and over 700 season tickets
are purchased. Yet the sales are
not enough to cover the costs.
The ministry of culture and the
city of Reykjavik are greatly re-
sponsible for financial assistance.
Another serious problem is the
lack of musicians to draw from,
especially in the strings. This
forces a reliance on imported
talent, much of which comes from
Czechoslovakia. Among the notable
foreigners incorporated is Maxim
Shostokovitch whose compositions
and brilliant piano playing would
be an asset to any musical body.
An American of Viennese origin,
rge Cleve, will be the guest
ductor for a concert on Feb-
ruary 25. The works to be per-
formed will be from Weber, Men-
delssohn and Schubert.
