Intramural BB
Play Resumes
Second half competition is un-
derway in intramural basketball,
but the leaders bear a familiar
look through Jan. 10th action.
In A League, NavCommSta's Big
Orange, first half winners and
losers of only one game, took
their first two second half con-
tests and lead NSGA (2-1) and
Supply (1-1).
Supply's David Devaney has put
in the points at an 18.2 clip to
hold a slim edge over Jack Beck's
17.6. Jack performed for ComFair
Kef in the first half but now is
doing his shooting for Air Ops.
Scoring averages are for the full
season.
Devaney also leads B League in
scoring with 26.7 per game for
High School. A distant second is
Grindavik's John Toles at 17.1.
The Teachers, B League first
half champs, have not lost after
three outings and share first
with Rockville, winners of a tri-
ple overtime marathon on Monday.
One game bake are the Icelandic
IKF Club, AFI, AMD and 57th FIS,
all at 2 - 1. ComFairKef dropped
back from A League and has found
little respite, losing two with a
lone victory.
Light play was the early pat-
tern in C League's A division as
NSGA II, Admin, Comptroller, and
Fleet Weather won their only con-
test. In B division, AFI II and
the Cavaliers at 2-0 held the top
over Commissary's 2-1 mark.
Balance, rather than high sco-
ring, is the order in C League as
the top five scorers are separa-
ted by only 2.3 points. Ed Bur-
ton at 12.8 leads, followed by
Dave Hettel, 11.3, Mick Odell,
11.1, Rich Martinez, 10.5, and
Skip Scripture, 10.1.
Most of "the girls in Ladies A
League don't score much, either,
except for Barbara Fredericks and
Jean Maxwell, whose 13.4 and 10.6
averages stand alone. They also
led their Max's Mice team to vic-
tory in its only game. The Pink
Panthers are 2-0 to lead.
In the three-team girls B Lea-
gue, the Castaways and Jets have
each defeated the Tigers in the
only games. Not much scoring in
this division as Nancy Kasting's
8.2 average leads Paula Lewis and
Dee O'Neill, each at 6.8.
C League Leader Is
Player of the Week
Ed Burton of NSGA II was chosen
for the first week of second half
play for his 16-point effort in
leading his team to victory over
the CFK Gobblers, the first half
champions. The score was 41-35
in a real upset. Burton is the
C league leading scorer with a
12.8 average.
The Petersburg, Va. native got
his cage start in high school
there and played intramural ball
at Northwest, Va., communications
station prior to coming to NSGA.
Game of the Week
The Vikings of A.T. Mahan High
School overcame a 15-point defi-
cit in the second half to defeat
the 57th Interceptors, 41-40, in
a real barn burner. David Devaney
scored on a short jump shot with
36 seconds to play to give the
Vikings the lead.
57th had three chances to take
the lead back but missed on all
three attempted shots. Devaney
led Viking scorers with 16 while
Drew Eason's 13 were high for the
Interceptors.
The gunners continue to show
their stuff at noon where Vern
Chewning at 20.9 and Brad Floto's
20.7 set the Open League pace and
Dan Haley at 20.3 and Denny Bour-
geois with 18.9 show the way in
the Recreation League.
Supply's 3-0 mark puts them in
a commanding Open League lead o-
ver the Nuggets and the Vandals
at 1-1. Pruitt's Terrors, 4-0,
and Shaw's Raiders, 3-0, still
had not felt the sting of defeat
on Monday.
