Det 14 rescues heart attack
victim from ship at sea
The captain of a U.S. Military
Sealift Command Ship was air-
lifted from his vessel June 14 by
an Iceland Defense Force rescue
helicopter after suffering a
heart attack.
Captain Anthony Massa of USNS
Dutton was lifted from his ship
by an HH-3E "Jolly Green Giant"
helicopter of Detachment 14, 39th
Aerospace Rescue and Recovery
Wing.
He was transferred to medical
facilities here immediately upon
the helicopter's return to Kef-
lavik.
Lieutenant Jane McWilliams, a
Navy Flight Surgeon, provided
medical attention during the re-
turn flight.
The Military Sealift Command
ship was located approximately
200 miles west of Keflavik when
the Iceland Defense Foice Opera-
tions Control Center received the
request for assistance.
The aircraft was piloted by
Captain Enoch Nicewarmer and co-
piloted by First Lieutenant
Thomas Walters. They completed
the mission with one aerial re-
fueling from an Air Force HC-130
aircraft piloted by First Lieut-
enant Ralph G. Bent.
Airman Orville Bellah, para-
rescueman, was lowered to the
deck of the ship by rescue hoist
to evaluate the situation and
strap the captain to the rescue
litter.
The patient and the parares-
cueman were then hoisted aboard
the helicopter for the return
flight to Keflavik.
