FIRE
9
The two boys were bored Their
parents had gone out and left
them alone. Looking for some-
thing to do, they found a candle
and a cigarette lighter.
They knew better. Their par-
ents had already warned them
about the hazards of playing with
fire. In fact, the Assistant
Fire Chief (at the request of the
parents) had explained the dan-
gers to them himself.
But they ignored or forgot
about the warnings. And soon
things were serious. The bedroom
was on fire.
They realized things were out
of control. An adult was driving
up to their building, and they
called to him for help. He
rushed in and attempted to put
out the fire with water carried
from a bathroom. After five min-
utes it was obvious the fire was
growing. He grabbed a phone and
dialed 17.
The Fire Department responded
immediately. Finding the master
bedroom in flames and the whole
upstairs filled with smoke. They
attacked the fire from inside and
out with water. Two pumper trucks
supplied the hoses combating the
fire.
They had the flames extin-
guished less than 15 minutes af-
ter the call for help had been
received.
But the firemen weren't fin-
ished yet. As Fire Chief S. R.
Eiriksson put it in the official
report, "All smoke was ventilated
from the building, first floor
contents covered with salvage
covers, water conveyed to the ex-
terior and debris removed from
the building. Heater and elec-
tricity for the apartment was se-
cured and broken windows covered
with sheets of wood."
The whole operation tooK three
hours. Damage was estimated at
$3500. Luckily, no one was hurt.
This fire happened here last
month. What can be done to pre-
vent others? The National Fire
Protection Association has some
suggestions.
First, parents should make
sure children do not have access
to matches or lighters.
Second, children should never
be left alone. If a fire starts,
young children may hide under a
bed or in a closet rather than
escape.
Third, don't wait to report a
fire.' Even if you think you can
control it yourself, let the fire
department know first— in case
you're wrong. In a fire, every
second counts. And fire fighting
is a job best left to profession-
als .
Firemen will distribute fire
safety pamphlets during the an-
nual fire hazard inspection be-
