Three NATO scouts
‘outfox’ two teams
in Reykjavik ‘hunt’
Three NATO base Boy Scouts
joined Icelandic Scouts Sunday on
an unusual "fox hunt" in Reykja-
vik.
Scouts Alfred and Patrick
Differ of Troop 436 and Webelo
Bobby Mercer from Pack 364 teamed
up in search of the fox.
The "fox" was actually an ama-
teur radio operator somewhere in
the city. The object—find him
within a two-hour time limit. The
"hounds" were the radio receiv-
ers, maps, and compasses used by
each team of Scouts.
Every five minutes the opera-
tor would transmit for 30 sec-
onds. Once the Scouts got a
bearing on the signal with the
receiver a line was drawn on the
map to show the direction of the
transmission. Then a decision
had to be made as to which way
along the line to travel, since
the signal could be coming from
either direction.
Each time the signal was
picked up, the same procedure was
followed. If the teams knew how
to use their tools, the lines
would begin to intersect and form
a triangle. Once the general
area of the fox's location was
mapped, it was a race against the
clock, and each other, to see
which team would win.
Alfred, Patrick and Bobby ar-
rived at the fox's "lair" first,
with one of the other two teams
close behind.
The fox hunt is a game that
originated with the Norwegian
Scouts. It teaches the boys how
to use a map and compass effec-
tively and have fun at the same
time.
