on the beginnings of the U.S. military.
Three pf these books, which will be
found on the new book shelf, are briefly
reviewed here:
1. Eagle and Sword by Richard II.
Kohn is about the Federalists and the
creation of the military establishment
in America from 1783 to 1802. It was
written to answer how and why the U.S.
military came into existence. Mr. Kohn
has written a little-known story of the
origins of American militarism and the
serious threat it posed to the democrat-
ic ideals of the young American ' nation.
The book raises questions about the pow-
er and influence of militarism in Ameri-
can politics concerning events such as
the Whiskey Rebellion, the Ipdian War
campaigns of "Mad Anthony" Wayne, and
the first Constitutional debates over
"national security."
2. Privateers and Volunteers by

story of the men and women of the Re-
serve Naval Forces from 1766 to 1866.
Captain Stivers, himself a. Naval Reserv-
ist for more than 30 years, writes a
history of how the Reserve Naval Forces
came to be the foundation for the mod-
ern-day Naval Reserves and what mistakes
were made during this period of American
history.
