White Falcon Page 4 Sight-Vour most precious possession* Within the next three hours at least one employee in the U.S.A. will lose the sight in one eye while at work. Before the day is over, one man will lose his sight in both eyes because of a serious industrial injury. Before this week is past, 63 persons will lose the sight in one eye, and sev- en will suffer loss of sight in both eyes. By the end of the month total losses of one eye will climb to 275, and figures for loss of both eyes to 30. By the end of the year more than 400 persons will have lost the sight in both eyes and 3,300 are expected to lose the sight in one eye. Yet, many of us, if asked, "What is your most precious possession?" would probably list your bank account, home, car, boat, or any number of other mater- ial things. Your eyes are your most precious pos- session. Visualize, if you will, your plight if you were to suddenly lose your sight. Many of you material possessions would become worthless to you. Most pleasure- able activities would no longer be yours to enj oy. Prevention protects Prevention is relatively simple and inexpensive. Protect "your most precious posses- sion" as diligently as you would your material possessions. Material things can be replaced, but your eyes, once lost, can never be replaced. Sports signups solicited Sign up for golf, slowpitch, and intermediate softball by calling 4558. Volleyball leagues 1st, 2nd place teams pulling away from the pack Both the American and National leagues seem to be two team races. In the American league, HS is un- defeated while AIMD has only one loss. High School has excellent defense and good ball handling with spotty serving and inconsistent offense; AIMD has Bob Simister casting a sinister shadow over the situation. It looks like a dogfight until the final game. COMFAIRKEF knocked off NCS in their first meeting to take a one game lead with COMFAIRKEF featuring the spikes of Lefty Anderson and the team's all around ball handling. NCS has Boysen Berry to lead them while they try to renew their winning ways. The ladies' league is also a two team race. The Waves are their own class while HS will probably be second. In mixed doubles play, the Guardians and Felons will be in contention, however, the Tacos are on the rebound after a bad start. TIRES Your tires should not be kept until they are practically bald. Bald tires increase the danger of skidding. Keep tires at their recommended infla- tion pressure for all normal driving. Tire pressure should be checked once a month. Tires larger of smaller than those installed by the manufacturer will affect speedometer accuracy. CAR TALK Understanding some of the troublesome noises cars often make will help you take better care of your auto and avoid break- downs . Tire Ticks—A rhythmatic ticking sound at low speed may warn that a nail, rock, or piece of glass is embedded in a tire. Engine Cackles—If your engine "cackles" or continues to run for a brief time after the ignition is shut off, your car's idle speed may need adjustment. Another way to avoid post ignition is to turn off the engine while in Drive. Speedometer Clicks—A clicking sound from the instrument panel usually indi- cates the need for speedometer service. Engine Knocks—Knocks from under the hood often means you need a higher octane fuel.
