Fourth of July turns out as ’fun for all'
Was it too dark to see the ball?
A mulligan on the first hole was how
the officers of the 57th Fighter Inter-
ceptor Squadron celebrated America's
201st birthday at midnight Monday on the
Keflavik Golf Course.
The Whiff Golf Classic, a traditional
July 4 opening, was played under over-
cast skies and high winds. Twenty-three
players turned out for the event, but
only 22 completed the scheduled nine
holes.
Pretournament warm ups began in the
club's committee meeting which were held
in the 57 th BOQ.
Lieutenant Colonel Richard J. Slowey,
57th FIS commander teed up the first
ball of this year's Whiff Classic and
drove it down the fairway.
The players kept loose by demonstrat-
ing different types of golf swings be-
cause the club house was closed.

Eymberts gets
sub-swim at
Saturday meet
By far the most dramatic point of Sat-
urday evening's base wide swim meet was
Bert Emyberts startling three and a
quarter underwater swim to capture the
Underwater Distance Swim. His efforts
coupled with Bill Prebble's win in the
100m breastroke put Det.14 in second
place for point totals in the meet.
Kurt Klappenbeach, the only triple
winner snatched up three firsts, the
100m freestyle, the 50m backstroke and
the 500m freestyle to give him the high
individual total and placed NCS ahead in
team totals.
The quickest action came in the 50m
butterfly when Bill Stone of Comptroller
and Marty Green of Recreation battled it
out in the final stretch. Stone out-
reached Green and won by one-tenth of a
second.
