receive their orders by the summer of

That’s the Idea, get out the old scraper
and do a job on icy windows... With the coming winter months, the
problem of driving will increase unless
you are prepared. You should have already
prepared your vehicle. This means that
the tires, windshield wipers, brakes, muf-
fler, lights, heating system and radiator
have all been checked and are operating
properly. _
If you were here this past winter, the best
thing to do is to consider yourself lucky, but to
forget it. It was not a normal Icelandic winter.
Since we can expect a more "normal" winter this
year let’s talk about the most prevalent driving
problem, that of visibility. The problem is
caused by the long periods of darkness coupled
with the blowing snow* (Have you ever seen it
snow horizontally?) and lack of driver ’s clearing windows of snow, ice and fog
before attempting to drive. There isn’t much you can do about the darkness and
blowing snow except—if you can’t see don’t drive. In regards to cleaning
windows it is best to get yourself a scraper and brush to remove the ice and
snow. The fog on the windows is best combattedby a good defroster. But
remember, the engine has to be warmed'up before any defrosting is accomplished
so take the extra time needed before driving.
An additional problem associated with visibility is the one of seeing
pedestrian.. Because of the lack of sidewalks an increased number of
pedestrians will be using the cleared roadway and invariably do so on the wrong
. . . but don’t stop short! Peeping Tom
drivers are asking for trouble with this little
visibility.
side of the road.
Think and plan ahead, be prepared for winter. By the way how about
buckling that seat belt.
Order now for Christmas
It’s that time of year again. In
fact, it may be later than you think.
If you plan to do any Christmas shopping
through stateside catalogs and haven't
sent in your order yet you might
consider doing some mail order
Christmas shopping with, today’s pay
check. If you want to receive a
package in time for Christmas the
package must be mailed from the states
to Iceland before Nov. 23. The same is
true for Space Available Mail (SAM) .
Packages being shipped by Parcel Airlift
(PAL) must be shipped from the states
no later than Nov. 30. It’s a little
easier for First Class Letters, they
don’t have to be sent from the states
until Dec. 12.
Don't figure that just because your
stationed closer to the North Pole this
year that you will get your Christmas
parcels earlier. Rumor has it that
the jolly old man with the white beard
is now enlisted in the Navy and working
as a postal clerk this year so it's up
to you to help him get your parcel here
on time. Do it today if you v.Tant your
Christmas, and your children's, to be
complete.

Square dancing
postponed
The Junior Midnight Sundowners and
the newly-formed square dance class will
not meet tomorrow as announced several
weeks ago. The reason for the cancel-
lation is the PTO Carnival slated for
noon to 9 p.m. tomorrow.
Open houses were held for a new
class on Oct. 15 and 22. The purpose
was to encourage youngsters to take
advantage of free square dance lessons
which will begin on Nov. 5.
All children between the ages of 8
and 12 are invited to come to the first
class.
