Vikings stage

by Rene Mahone
Saturday afternoon the A.T. Mahan
Vikings staged its annual Wrestle-O-Rama
to determine wrestling champions in
eleven weight divisions. None of the
eleven matches went the full three
rounds as Paul Gilstrap led all grap-
plers with two relatively quick pins.
In the opening match, Gilstrap, a senior,
scored a quick pin over Art Underwood to
capture the 138 pound title. The agile
senior scored his victory in 46 seconds
of the first round. His pace seemed to
set the pattern for the remaining
matches.
The lightest division (80 lbs. and
under) produced the longest match of the
afternoon as it took 77 pounder
Darrin Virden, nearly three rounds
before he was able to pin 70 pounder
Sean Nickerson. After leading 14 to 0
late in the third round, Virden finally
was able to hold Nickerson's shoulder to
the mat. The end came for Nickerson
with only 7 seconds remaining in the
match.
In the 90 and under weight, Mitch
Cowart found the range of Bevins and
pinned him in the time of 1:59 of the
first round. Thus Cowart was able to
successfully defend his titled for the
second year in a row.
Dan O'Connor had little trouble in
defending his title in the 98 and under
pound class. O'Connor jumped off to a 7
to 2 lead in the first round as time and
time again he had his opponent in
trouble. Although Jim Hooper put a
tremendous fight, it was evident that he
wasn't any match for the fighting Irish-
man who scored a pin with just 16
seconds gone in the second round. It
was a heartbreak loss for Hooper who was
working hard for an upset.
The 112 pound class proved to be a
mismatch as 107 pound Mike Farrell
handled his adversary Bill Nosbisch with
ease. The more experienced Farrell
Wrestle-O- Rama
scored with a pin with the match hardly
underway in the time of 46 seconds of
the first round. It was a matter of age
versus youth with age being the deciding
factor. However, the game Nosbisch,
only a 7th grader, will be a contender
for the title next year.
Mike Woods captured the 119 and 126
pound titles via default as his
opponents failed to show. The defending
champ had no one to contest him so he
wrestled an exhibition match with the
Robert Dixon who pinned him.
Dixon, the 132 pound favorite, won by
default when his opponent, Jimmy
McDowell, failed to show up for the
match on time. The referee had already
declared Dixon the winner via default
when the underdog McDowell showed up for
the match.
In the 145 pound class Gilstrap was
able to capture his second title of the
afternoon but had a rougher time in this
heavier division with Kevin Dewater.
Dewater, a 141 pounder, was leading
Gilstrap 5 to 2 in the second round when
Gilstrap scored a reverse to get Dewater
in a pinning position. The end for
Dewater came in 1:13 in the second
round.
Bill Waites put a game battle again
Robert Berry in the 155 pound class b
lacked the finesse of Berry took
a quick three to nothing lead in the
first round before Waites was able to
score any points. In the second round
both attempted to be more aggressive but
Berry got the upper hand on Waites and
pinned him in 1:07 of the second round.
